C-S bounces back quickly with win over
Athens after 40-20 setback at Mendon
Avoiding losing streaks is something any basketball coach likes to see,
While the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball avoided their first multiple game losing streak with a 47-32 win over Athens on the road January 26, Lady Panther coach Chip Paddock was also pleased with growth he saw in other areas.
The few times Athens appeared to generate momentum with small runs, C-S quickly seized the momentum back with a surge of its own.
Between strong defense and longer runs at the offensive end, C-S was able to get back into the win column after suffering a 40-20 loss at Mendon two days earlier.
Athens scored two straight baskets in the second quarter to reduce C-S’ lead to 12-9, however the Lady Panthers responded with two steals that led to a pair of quick baskets by Holly Talbert. The two baskets was followed a short time later by a basket by Lillie Edwards off an offensive rebound that bumped C-S’ lead to 18-9 with 3:25 left in the first half.
Athens, which trailed by a 19-12 count at halftime, started the second half with a basket, however C-S answered with a 9-0 run that helped the team take a 37-17 lead into the final quarter.
Athens made an early come back push by scoring the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to reduce the deficit to 10 points, however after the two teams traded baskets to make the score 39-29, the Lady Panthers held the home team to just three free throws and 0-for-5 shooting from the floor over the final 3:36 to secure the win.
“It’s good. Basketball is a game of runs. They went on some runs, we went on some runs. It was back and forth but we were able to minimize their runs and ours were just a little longer. Our defensive effort the last few games has been superb. The offense is going to come from our defense that we spend a lot of time working on,” said Paddock.
Holly Talbert’s 16 points and six steals paced C-S. Addy Reeves added 13 points and six rebounds and Lillie Edwards contributed 11 points and six rebounds.
Maria Bronsink led Athens in scoring with nine points.
The 7-2 Lady Panthers will return to action February 5 in a makeup game at home against Delton-Kellogg at 6 p.m.
