Coach hopes small attributes creates momentum

By Bruce Rolfe

Sometimes the little things that go unnoticed can put a team on a path towards success.

Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball coach Kenny Sattler got a glimpse of how good his team can be when they execute basic fundamentals and work hard in other areas in last Friday’s 55-46 win over Athens at Athens.

The Panthers, now 4-8, out-rebounded Athens 45-21, but more importantly worked hard to get into good rebounding position, especially under the offensive boards where the team corralled 23 boards compared to six for Athens.

Playing perhaps his best game of the season, Gage Champion pulled down nine of his 10 rebounds under the offensive boards. Luke Lawrence, with six offensive rebounds, and Miles Shannon with five, also worked hard under the offensive glass, giving C-S second and third chance opportunities.

C-S also did a good job distributing the basketball. The Panthers totaled 17 assists, including 11 in the first half that helped C-S move in front 33-21. Chase VanMiddlesworth, Billy Felton and Champion led the way with four assists each.

C-S also did a good job reducing its turnovers, committing nine miscues in the game.

While reaching high scoring and rebounding totals can bring more attention, Sattler was extremely happy with the way his team performed defensively, under the boards and distributing the ball.

“We were efficient in the first half. I think we had two turnovers in the first half, which is amazing. We were patient on offense. We weren’t forcing things. If it wasn’t there we weren’t just throwing it. Rebound-wise, we were blessed to have a rebounding advantage and we were fighting for everything. The kids were diving after loose balls. Filling the bucket, we’re obviously filling it and it was pretty cool today,” said the C-S coach.

A 20-11 burst in the second quarter, fueled by Miles Shannon’s 13 points, gave C-S a 33-21 lead at halftime and the team maintained the 12-point lead entering the fourth quarter (45-33).

Shannon led C-S with 18 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. Chase VanMiddlesworth added 11 points and four assists, Champion pitched in with nine points, 10 rebounds, and four assists, and Billy Felton scored eight points and dished out four assists.
