Last year’s run to semifinals brings motivation for team

By Bruce Rolfe

Last year’s magical and historical season that saw the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team advance to the Division 4 State Finals at Wings Stadium, brought motivation for the 2023-2024 co-op wrestling team to return to the State Finals venue and a chance to leave their own mark.

C-S-M finished last season with a 29-4 record, earned a 2nd place finish in the conference, were district and regional champions, and recorded an upset win over New Lothrop 38-29 in the Division 4 quarterfinals at the Team State Finals at Wings Stadium before losing in the semifinals 51-12 to the eventual state champion, Division 4 powerhouse Hudson.

The co-op wrestling team started the post season in a big way February 3 at Constantine by placing first at the SAC Conference Championship match. C-S-M had eight All-Conference wrestlers, including six conference champions, and two All-Conference Honorable Mention wrestlers at the event.

C-S-M continued its postseason journey in the team districts February 8 against Gobles in the semifinals. Bloomingdale and Bangor wrestled in the other match. Log onto the Climax Crescent Facebook page for results. The team district winner moves on to the team regionals February 14 at a site to be determined.

If the local co-op wrestling team captures a team district championship and wins a second straight regional championship, the team will return to Wings Stadium for the State Finals February 23 and 24.

“I think everyone on the team has the goal of getting back to Wings Stadium and competing at team State Finals. Several guys have made sacrifices to help us get there,” said first year coach Mike Reitz, who took over the C-S head coaching job after former long time Panther coach Jason Wade stepped down at the end of last season after 19 seasons.

Wrestlers who remember falling short in the regionals two years ago, said they were motivated to advance further last season and they did. After the team reached a new level last year by advancing to the semifinals, there was plenty of motivation entering this season to get back to the State Finals.

“Ever since we got into high school, we've been climbing that ladder. Because our freshman year we lost in the regionals. And then last year we actually made it to Wing Stadium. Made it to the Final Four. Now we just want to keep building on that and keep progressing like we know we can,” said junior Logan Gilbert.

“It's so motivating to get back because last year was such a surreal moment, being able to be there at Wing Stadium. Especially going there and watching it my freshman year and eighth grade year. It made me really want to go there. And then once we got there last year, I just wanted to get more of it. I think we have the potential to go farther than we did last year,” adds Gilbert.
