While the effort remains present, the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team has faced double digit deficits through various parts of the second half the last three games, resulting in three straight setbacks.
Monday’s 55-49 loss to Delton-Kellogg at C-S Jr./Sr. High School was the latest example.
Delton opened the fourth quarter with a basket to extend its lead to 46-32 and the visitors maintained a double digit lead until Billy Felton knocked down a shot with 4:25 left to pull C-S to within 48-40.
Delton-Kellogg took its last double digit lead with 3:04 left (50-40) but C-S could not overtake the Panthers, who made 5-of-8 free throws over the final 1:46.
Delton-Kellogg moved in front 17-9 after one quarter, but C-S, behind a trio of three-point baskets by Billy Felton and seven points from Miles Shannon,
battled back to forge a 27-27 tie at halftime.
While C-S encountered cold shooting in the third quarter, Delton-Kellogg started to heat it up.
The Panthers managed to make just 2-of-12 floor attempts in the quarter, while the Panthers connected on three triples and outscored the home team 17-5 to take a 44-32 lead entering the final stanza.
Shannon scored 17 points, Felton finished with 11 points and Chase Van Middlesworth added eight points to lead C-S.
Next up for the 4-12 Panthers is a home game against Colon February 9 in the Carol Vick Memorial game at C-S.

C-S Can’t Catch Springport
The Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team dropped a 52-40 decision to Springport February 1 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
The Panthers never led in the contest, but responded to offensive struggles in the first half with a strong second half only to fall short.
C-S coach Kenny Sattler felt his team did some good things on the floor despite the loss, which he hopes will carry over into the rest of the season.
“We made strides today. I don’t think we have any regrets today. We made big strides. We keep talking about that bucket and we put water in the bucket today. We had a tough one and Gobles put it to us (the previous night) and I thought our kids responded really well and played hard. The physicality of the game and they responded to that,” said Sattler.
Springport (11-5) moved in front 16-9 after one quarter, however a hot shooting second quarter by the Spartans combined with seven C-S turnovers allowed the visitors to increase the lead to 33-16 at halftime.
Springport took its largest lead of the game (38-17) at the 5:38 mark of the third quarter on a slam by Brayden Hawes, but the Panthers pulled to within 43-25 at the end of three quarters.
The Panthers refused to quit in the fourth quarter, knocking down a trio of three-point baskets including a triple by Ivan Abad-Reyes with 5:05 left in the game that reduced the deficit to 10 points (47-37), but Springport made 7-of-10 free throws over the final 1:14 to secure the win.
Shannon led C-S in scoring with 19 points to go with five rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. Hawes led the Spartans with 20 points.
