Health scare prompts Climax Village Council president to resign

By Bruce Rolfe

A recent health scare has prompted Climax Village Council President Jim Cummings to submit what he termed as a letter of retirement.

Cummings read the letter at the end of the February 6 regular Village Council meeting.

He said he was told by his doctor “to eliminate any and all stress from my life immediately.”

“My wife and I discussed this at length and I am taking steps to conform to my doctor’s orders. I quickly realized how much I take things to heart and have basically spent my life running on stress. I no longer have that option,” said the Village Council president.

Cummings said he and his wife Faye have decided to travel more and he plans to pay more attention to his business at his Soundstage I recording studio.

He adds his music has been very important to him and allows him to “shut everything else out and that’s just what I need right now.”

Cummings said the Council will have to appoint a new Village president at the February 20 meeting, which will be his last meeting.

“I will most certainly miss working for the people who elected me.....the Village of Climax,” said Cummings in a prepared statement sent to the Crescent.

It’s been an honor to serve my community these past few years, and I have no intention to completely stop my love for it, or willingness to contribute. This decision was not made in haste, but it is a necessary one dictated by life,” continued the Village president.

Two Library Board members appointed

The Climax Village Council intended to fill just one Lawrence Memorial District Library Board vacancy at its regular meeting, however after learning current library board member and council trustee David Miller plans to submit a letter of resignation from the library board at the February 27 meeting, the Council made two appointments.

The Council unanimously appointed Stormy Cook and Wendall Stoeffler to the Library Board, effective after the library board accepts Miller’s resignation at the February 27 meeting. Stoeffler expressed interest in filling the vacant Library Board position that was created when former board member Jim Swarthout resigned. Cook expressed interest in also being a library board member at the January 16 meeting.

Swarthout also served as the treasurer on the Library Board and Library Director Bill Lewis pointed out Stoeffler has experience working with Quick Books and “fits in very well for what we need for the cross checks and balances in the library as a board member.”

In other business covered at the February 6 meeting:

• Department of Public Works Supervisor T.J. Gibson told the Council the DPW is in the process of repainting village street signs, however some signs will need to be replaced. The Council unanimously approved up to $1000 for new street signs.

• The Council unanimously approved a resolution appointing Department of Public Works Supervisor T.J. Gibson as the Street Administrator for the Village of Climax. This is a requirement by the state.

• The Council held the second reading of a Parking Ordinance. Ordinance Chairman Dave Miller said the ordinance clarifies and updates requirements for residential parking. The ordinance takes effect 10 days after publication.

• After some discussion, the council unanimously approved offering people an option to purchase a space on the Prairie Home Cemetery columbarium where a memoriam could be placed. The Council will determine a price for the memoriam space in the future.
