A big start helped the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team bounce back quickly from a loss to Colon February 9 with a 54-33 victory over Battle Creek St. Philip Monday in a make up game at Battle Creek St. Philip.
The Lady Panthers, now 11-4, jumped out to a 21-8 lead after one quarter and were never threatened the rest of the way.
A cold shooting stretch by C-S in the second quarter when the team managed just one free throw by Holly Talbert allowed the Tigers to pull to within 22-14 at halftime lead, but the visitors regained the offensive touch in the third quarter when they outscored the Tigers 18-7 for a 40-21 lead after three quarters.
Talbert, who was nine-for-15 from the floor, led C-S in scoring with 20 points to go with four assists and three rebounds. Jaise Lane added 11 points and four steals.
C-S will host Bellevue February 16 at 6 p.m., on Winterfest night. The team remains home for a game against Battle Creek St. Philip February 20 at 6 p.m. and Mendon February 23 at 6 p.m., which will be senior night.

C-S can’t overcome Colon’s huge start
Some times the way a team responds to a little adversity can go a long way.
While his team dropped a 58-34 decision to Colon February 9 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School, Lady Panther coach Chip Paddock was pleased how his team responded in the second half after a disasterous first half.
Colon improved to 14-1 with the win.
Despite falling behind 25-3 after one quarter and 39-13 at halftime, the Panthers still battled hard in the second half when they outscored the No. 2 ranked Magi 21-19.
Paddock liked his teams’ push back and competitiveness despite a large deficit.
“Tip your cap to Colon. That’s a well oiled machine. They’ve got a lot of the pieces for what it takes. They’ve got size, they’ve got length and they’ve got girls that can shoot. A lot of respect for them. As far as us, I challenged them in the second half. We wanted our second half to be a little more grit, a little more grind. And we showed a lot of character. We fought until the end,” said the C-S coach.
Colon took advantage of 16 turnovers by the Panthers in the first half, helping the Magi extend the lead to 26 points (39-13) at halftime.
The Magi held a 50-26 lead after three quarters before C-S cut into the visitors’ lead in the fourth quarter.
C-S shot a cool 24 percent (12-41) overall from the floor including a 2-for-9 effort from three-point range.
Holly Talbert scored 10 points to go with five rebounds for C-S and Lillie Edwards added nine points. Reese Williams led Colon with 21 points and Megann Mullins added 10.
