The Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team earned an exciting 47-46 win over the River Rats of Holland Black River on Snow Coming Night February 9 at G-A High School.
The win sends G-A into a home game February 16 against Martin with a 5-11 record.
Trailing 9 to 8, the Rams scored the final 8 points of the first quarter to take a 16 to 9 lead after one period. Grace Gibson hit two three pointers and Jaidyn Klimp scored inside in the run.
After hitting 57% from inside the arc and 40% from outside the arc in the first quarter the Rams went cold. Klimp and Maureen McBride scored baskets and Lili Thompson added a free throw as G-A could only manage five points in the period. Black River, scoring mainly from the inside, totaled fifteen points to take a 24 to 21 halftime lead.
Midway through the third quarter the River Rats built a 24-21 lead before the Rams went on a 10 to 2 run to finish the third. The run started with a three from Lili Thompson, two short range baskets by Rhyann Wilson and another three from Holley Coburn. G-A was back in the lead at 34 to 33.
Black River scored the first six points of the final quarter to take a 39 to 34 lead with four minutes to play. Mya Erskin hit a three and Klimp added a free throw and layup to give the Rams a 40 to 39 lead at the 3:10 mark.
The teams traded baskets and The River Rats took the lead at 46 to 43 with 34 seconds remaining on the clock. After Klimp scored a basket, she stole the inbounds pass and nearly scored again. In the fight for the rebound she was called for her fifth foul and Black River had a chance to put the game away with 14 seconds remaining. The visitors missed both free throws and the Rams called a time out with a chance to win.
On the inbounds play Wilson drove down the left side of the defense, passed the ball out to Maureen McBride at the top of the circle and she calmly swished the game winning shot as time ran out.
Scoring honors for G-A went to Klimp with 16 points. Grace Gibson scored 8 for the Rams with Thompson adding 6, Wilson 5 and McBride 4 including the game winner.
After the hot shooting in the first quarter the Rams finished hitting 25% from both two and three point range. A major factor in the win was after committing 10 turnovers in the first half the Rams were nearly perfect in the second half, committing only one turnover.

Watervliet uses big fourth quarter
to subdue Rams

The G-A Lady Rams trailed the Panthers of Watervliet by as many as ten points for the first half of their game on February 6th. A late third quarter run saw them close that gap to just one point late in the period.
The fourth quarter saw the host Panthers take control of the game with a 14 to 2 burst that gave them a hard fought 46 to 31 win over the Rams.
A highlight for Panther fans came in the first half when senior Grace Chisek scored her 1000 career point.
Jaidyn Klimp led the Ram scorers with 8 points with Grace Gibson close behind adding 7. Lili Thompson and Mya Erskin each contributed 5 points.
Turnovers were again a factor in the game as the Rams committed 25 miscues. It should be noted that they only had three turnovers in the third quarter when they outscored the Panthers 13 to 8.

Rams post big win over B.C. Pennfield

G-A picked up its 4th win of the season, a 49 to 43 nail bitter over the Panthers of Pennfield February 5 at G-A High School.
The Rams held a 13 to 11 first quarter lead on the strength of two 2 three pointers by Mya Erskin, a free throw and two inside baskets by Jaidyn Klimp, and Lili Thompson’s two free throws.
The Rams extended their lead, out scoring the Panthers 15 to 9 in the second quarter. Rhyann Wilson led the charge with a put back basket and three of four free throws. Erskin added to the cause with another three pointer, Grace Gibson added a three pointer of her own and Maureen McBride made a pair of three throws.
Trailing 28 to 20, the Panthers out scored the Rams in the third quarter and finished the period in a tie at 37 all.
G-A went ahead at 41 to 37 midway through the fourth quarter only to have the visiting Panthers close the gap to 2 points at 42 to 40 at the two minute mark. The Rams had several chances to take control of the game, but missed 7 of 8 free throws early in the period.
With one minute to play, Rhyann Wilson sank the first of two free throws, got her own rebound and scored on a short jumper giving G-A a 46 to 42 lead. Two free throws by Erskin and another by Gibson completed the scoring.
Klimp lead the Rams with 14 points, Erskin scored 11 and Gibson and Wilson each had 8. At the charity stripe, G-A hit 15 of 39 chances. G-A collected a whopping 55 rebounds. Ellesa Callender grabbed 11, Klimp picked up 10 and Wilson had 9 to lead the Rams.
