Tenacious defense helps Lady Panthers to 44-15 win
By Bruce Rolfe
Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball coach Chip Paddock has emphasized defense all season, but his team took the stinginess to another level Friday in a 44-15 win over Bellevue.
C-S, now 12-4 overall and 6-3 in the SCAA West Division entering play February 20, frustrated Bellevue throughout the contest by making the visitors hurry shots or with pressure defense that led to many Bronco turnovers.
C-S came up with 26 steals in the game.
“We concentrate daily (on defense) in practices. Our approach is defense. And from our defense, offense will come. So our main concentration is playing good defense. We’ve talked about just progressing every day. Every day is a new opportunity to get better. And I think as we’ve been going down the stretch and then through the season, we’ve been doing a good job of progressing daily. So very happy,” said the Lady Panther coach.
Bellevue took an 8-7 lead into the second quarter, however between C-S’ lock down defense and Bellevue’s cold shooting, the Panthers were able to pull away.
A Bellevue basket in the second quarter wound up being the visitors’ only basket from the floor the rest of the game.
C-S, behind eight points including a pair of three-point baskets by Jaise Lane, and six points from Holly Talbert, took a 21-10 lead into the intermission.
Bellevue managed just five free throws in the second half.
Talbert continued to find the basket in the third quarter, dropping in nine points to help the Panthers to a 32-14 lead after three quarters.
Talbert finished with 22 points and five steals and Lane finished with 10 points and eight steals.

Panthers give division leaders scare
but fall short
By Bruce Rolfe
While the wins aren’t coming as regularly like the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team would like to see, important attributes have remained in place.
The Panthers gave SCAA West Division leaders Bellevue a scare February 16 but fell short on Winterfest night at C-S, 48-41.
The loss drops C-S’ overall record to 5-15 and 2-8 in the SCAA West Division, while the No. 13 ranked Broncos improve to 15-3 overall and 11-0 in the division.
C-S varsity basketball coach Kenny Sattler was once again impressed how his team battled and refused to give up, playing with high amounts of energy throughout the game.
“Bellevue is always a top team. Has been for quite a few years. Our kids battled through some adversity. Some things didn’t maybe go our way whether it was our making or just the way Bellevue played and then made plays. But our kids battled, never got down, never gave up all the way to the end. Our kids rose to the occasion. I told them I was very proud of them,” said Sattler.
Turnovers and long stretches of cold shooting were once again factors in the loss for C-S. The Panthers, who made just 14 percent of its two-point attempts and committed 28 turnovers in a loss to Kalamazoo Hackett three days earlier, committed 26 miscues and made 39 percent of its two-point attempts against Bellevue.
C-S trailed by an 8-7 count after one quarter, but Bellevue put together its strongest quarter in the second stanza to move in front 27-16 at halftime.
C-S was much more aggressive attacking the rim in the third quarter, resulting in nine free throw opportunities. Gage Champion’s seven points and five-for-six effort helped the home team pull to within 34-30 after three quarters.
C-S made all five of its two-point attempts in the fourth quarter to remain within striking distance.
Bellevue moved in front 40-34 on a three-point basket with 5:21 left in the fourth quarter, but a Gage Champion basket with 3:55 left pulled C-S back to with four points.
The four-point deficit wound up being the closest C-S could get as the Broncos outscored the home team 8-5 the rest of the way.
Champion led C-S in scoring with 16 points and Miles Shannon added 13 points, 15 rebounds and four steals.
C-S will host Mendon in the regular season finale February 26 and then face Battle Creek Calhoun Christian in the district opener February 26 at 7 p.m. at C-S High School.

C-S can’t overcome Hackett’s hot shooting
A cold shooting night and a high number of turnovers by the Panthers combined with a scorching night shooting from the floor by Kalamazoo Hackett were big contributors in Climax-Scotts’ 59-16 loss to the Irish February 13 on the road.
C-S managed to make just 14 percent (4-29) two-point attempts and did not make any three-point attempts. Hackett shot a blistering 61 percent (22-36) from two-point range but only made one of 15 three-point attempts.
The Panthers also struggled taking care of the ball, committing 28 turnovers.
The Irish, who moved to 11-8 with the win, fired on all cylinders all four quarters, while C-S struggled throughout the game.
A 5-for-7 effort from two-point range helped the home team move in front 12-5 after one quarter.
C-S failed to make any baskets from the floor in the second quarter, but also committed 10 turnovers, Hackett shot 53 percent (8-15) from two-point range, racing out to a 28-9 halftime advantage.
C-S’ frustrations continued in the second half when the visitors committed nine more turnovers. C-S managed just a Gage Champion basket and two free throws by Luke Lawrence in the third quarter and couldn’t slow down the potent Irish offense that shot 80 percent from two-point range (4-5), helping the home team move in front 44-13 after three quarters.
A cold shooting fourth quarter (1-8 from two-point range) by C-S and another hot shooting quarter by Hackett (5-9 on two-point attempts) prevented the Panthers from enjoying a comeback.
Luke Lawrence’s six points led C-S in scoring.
