The team portion of the wrestling season concluded for the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team with a 39-26 loss to St. Louis in the Division 4 quarterfinals at Wings Stadium February 23, but for six members on the team, there’s one more big event remaining.
Logan Gilbert (106-pound weight class), Cole Reitz (120), Haylen Buell (132), Jayce Ritchie (126), Jackson Bagwell (144) and Sam Bleeker (215) qualified for the Division 4 Individual State Finals March 1 and 2 at Ford Field in Detroit after earning top four finishes at the Individual Regionals.
The top eight finishers earn all-state medals at the state finals.
Gilbert, a regional champion, will be wrestling in his third individual state finals event. The Panther junior was weight class champion his freshman year and finished second last year.
Gilbert will take a 46-3 record into his first round match against Manistique junior Landon Weber (31-11).
Buell, a regional champion, is returning to the individual state finals for a second time after medaling with a second place finish last year.
The Martin sophomore will face Inland Lakes freshman Gus Carper (24-12) in the first round and takes a 39-4 record into the State Finals.
Martin junior Jayce Ritchie, who placed third at the regionals, will face Hanover Horton senior David Fielder (45-6) in the first round. Ritchie, wrestling in his second individual state finals after he medaled with a sixth place finish last year, will take a 26-4 record into the State Finals.
Jackson Bagwell, who placed third at the regionals, will be wrestling in his second individual state finals event. The C-S junior will take a 48-10 record into his first round match against Pine River sophomore Jericho Holmes (34-4).
C-S junior Sam Bleeker, who placed fourth at the regionals, will open the state finals against Charlevoix senior Landon Swanson (43-2). Bleeker, who sports a 34-14 record, is enjoying his first trip to the individual state finals.
Reitz, who had his season cut short near the end of last season with a neck injury, will also be enjoying his first individual state finals.
The C-S sophomore, who was a weight class champion at the regionals, will take a 34-10 record into his first round match against Addison sophomore Iverson Espinoza-Rojo (28-13).
