C-S advances to district semifinals with
51-40 win over Calhoun Christian

By Bruce Rolfe

After falling behind at halftime the last six games, the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team reversed the trend by leading at the break in Monday’s 51-40 victory over Calhoun Christian in the district tournament opener at C-S Jr./Sr. High School,

C-S, now 6-17, hosted Battle Creek St. Philip in the second semifinal game Wednesday (Log onto the Climax Crescent Facebook page for score). Battle Creek Academy and Marshall Academy squared off in the other semifinal game and the district championship game was played Thursday.

The Panthers answered many Battle Creek Calhoun Christian runs with a run of their own in the second half to hold off any comeback attempts by the visitors.

Strong rebounding, especially under the offensive boards, led to many second and third opportunities for C-S in the first half.

A 4-for-5 shooting effort from two-point range that included many inside baskets, helped C-S to a 14-10 lead after one quarter.

Both teams enjoyed a hot shooting effort in the second quarter with 50 percent shooting from two-point range, however C-S extended the lead to 28-20 at halftime..

Calhoun Christian reduced the deficit to 37-32 after three quarters.

The Cougars pulled to within 44-37 with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter on a Chandler Latimer triple, but C-S had push back. Chase VanMiddlesworth sandwiched a pair of baskets around a Miles Shannon basket that gave the home team a 50-37 lead with 50.1 seconds left in the game.

VanMiddlesworth led C-S with 15 points, while Shannon produced 13 points to go with 12 rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots. Billy Felton added nine points.
