One enhancement that was planned by the Kalamazoo County Parks Department in 2023 at Cold Brook County Park near Climax is now part of the 2024 package of improvements the County Parks Department has planned.
Kalamazoo County Parks Department Director Dave Rachowicz said new disc golf baskets and a fishing dock at Cold Brook were not received until late in 2023 so the Parks Department decided not to make the new installations until 2024.
The County Parks Department director adds new tee pads, signage, and course improvements at Cold Brook County Park are also planned for 2024.
Another notable improvement planned for 2024 will take place at Markin Glen County Park, where Rachowicz said new restrooms and playgrounds will be built.
He adds the new Arthur E. & Mildred H. Woollam Nature Preserve will open to the public in 2024. This is a 212-acre park that was the former Rota-Kiwan Boy Scout camp.
When looking back at 2023 gate admission numbers, Rachowicz said overall, attendance was 1,802,514, which is up slightly from 2022.
Final gate admission numbers in 2023 at local county parks and facilities:
• Kalamazoo Rivery Valley Trail - 354,925
• Cold Brook County Park - 69,105
• Scotts Mill County Park - 21,300
• River Oaks - 413,603
• The Expo Center - 208,649
“Overall, admissions were up slightly led by the Expo Center and River Oaks. 2023 saw events continue to recover (from the pandemic) and we had several new events,” said Rachowicz.
The County Parks director said park passes and entry fees are unchanged in 2024. Annual passes are $30, $25 for a senior pass (62 & under), and daily passes are $5 per vehicle. The County Parks Department is currently accepting reservations for the 2024 camping and picnic season. With the impact of construction at nearby Fort Custer Recreation Area, the County Parks Department is anticipating a busy 2024 camping season at Cold Brook County park.
