The Prairie Historical Society room has a new television in place for visitors to enjoy presentations and PHS content thanks to a combined effort between the Lawrence Memorial District Library and PHS.

Lawrence Memorial District Library Director Bill Lewis said the library had $700 in its budget earmarked for programs and purchased a new 55-inch television for slightly over $400. Lewis said some additional equipment will be added with the remaining money left over, offering visitors an enhanced experience.

Lewis said the PHS was going to purchase the wall mount for the television but that was obtained for no price.

Kevin Harvey and Pat Harvey of PHS, and Lewis installed the wall mount and television. Kevin Harvey installed networking.

“We were coming at the end of the year of the first year budget. We had money for it. We looked at it and said how can we do this to benefit the building? Both groups that work in the building and the community. Now it is there for any one who comes in to use. Village Council meetings. Anybody that needs to use it, the T.V. is here for them,” said Lewis.

Lewis said he has already used the new television for two presentations.

The Library Director said PHS visitors can benefit by looking at older VHS tapes and other video items that have been converted to digital by Kevin Harvey on the new television.

“We’re trying to make things happen and make the building important. That’s really what this is about. We don’t care what door people come in. We want them to come to the building. If we grow, we hope the Historical Society grows. If one grows, the other should grow by getting people into the building and seeing the differences in it,” adds Lewis.

“It just gives us a much better presentation point for the community. That’s what it’s for, it’s for the community. The library looked at it at, people pay their taxes. Whatever we can try to do to make things better for the community, we’re going to do that. And because we both work out of the same building, we want to make sure each other reap benefits of what’s going on,” continued the library director.

The new television is the first of many improvements planned in the Library and Historical Room areas.

Lewis said after the library closes April 10, the library will be closed April 11-14 so new carpeting can be installed throughout the building and new shelving units can be installed in the library.
