From The August 1, 2014 Climax CrescentWW II Veteran Who Grew Up in Scotts Has 72-Year Dream Fulfilled
Francis Smith lived out a dream by co-piloting a bi-plane similar to the one he flew in at the age of 18 while growing up in Scotts, Tuesday. And Al Wright, the owner of the Stearman bi-plane Smith flew in, was glad to help the World War II veteran fulfill his dream at Newman’s Field and airport on the west side of Kalamazoo.
Smith, a 1942 graduate of Scotts High School, not only developed ambitions to fly in a bi-plane similar to the one he flew in with his good friend Morton Schmidt at the age of 18 in Scotts, but he also wanted to use the flight to honor his brother, Warren “Rex” Smith and best friend Kenny Snyder, who were both Scotts High School graduates and killed during World War II.

Francis Smith Makes Another Generous Donation to Scholarship Fund Earmarked for C-S Seniors
For many years, 1942 Scotts High School graduate Francis Smith has had intense ambitions of keeping the memory of his brother, Warren “Rex” Smith and his best friend, Kenneth Snyder, who were killed serving their country during World War II, alive. The two young soliders’ bodies were never recovered and returned to the small town of Scotts where they enjoyed so many good memories.
After making a very generous donation of a matured annuity that totaled approximately $105,134.06 a couple of years ago to the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency Foundation that established a fund for scholarships awarded annually to Climax-Scotts seniors in memory of his brother and good friend, Smith made another donation to the fund July 29.
After living out a dream of flying on a bi-plane similar to the one he flew in with another childhood friend, Morton Schmidt, when he was 18, Smith presented a check similar to the matured annuity amount, to K-RESA Deputy Superintendent and Treasurer of the K-RESA Fund, Holly Norman. The generous donation will be added to an existing scholarship fund for C-S seniors that will live in perpetuity. The interest from the funds Smith has donated, will be gifted to seniors at Climax-Scotts High School annually for scholarships.

From The July 30, 1999 Climax CrescentOne Mill Proposal for Improvements at Lawrence Memorial District Library Will Be on Special Election Ballot September 14
District Library Board members of the Lawrence Memorial District Library will have another I-mill proposal on a special election ballot Sept. 14, but the number of years has been shaved to five years compared to the six-year proposal that was turned down last year.
If passed, funds would be available to the district library for many improvements and would also generate consistent funding, longer library hours and a paid library staff who would be trained on the services the library would have to offer. Currently, the library is open approximately 20 hours a week and staffed by volunteers. Internet access is another future item that is anticipated to be available for patrons if the millage is passed.
If the proposal is passed, it is estimated $42,820 would be raised the first year of the levy.

Jan Vosburg Travels to Washington, D.C. to Garner Increased Support for FQPA Corrective Legislation
Nothing rings truer or louder to a Congressman than the voice of a constituent in his/her office.
A group of 15 producers, including Jan Vosburg of Climax, selected from targeted Michigan Congressional districts, found that to be true during a Farm Bureau fly-in to Washington, D.C. last week, where they were extremely successful in garnering additional support for the scientific implementation of the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA).
FQPA, passed in 1996, was designed to assess risk factors for pesticides and provide regulation, but instead in being hastily and unscientifically implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency, threatening the future use of several effective, safe and cost-effective crop management tools.

From The August 2, 1974 Climax CrescentBaby Born in Ambulance
Mrs. Janet Diane Vorva of Galesburg had twins Monday — not generally a newsworthy event, except to the immediate family.
In Mrs. Vorva’s case, however, the births were unexpectedly speedy. The first twin was born at home, with only Mrs. Vorva’s six other young children to attend. The second was born in an ambulance on the way to Borgess Hospital.
Mrs. Vorva and the twins, William Michael and Patricia Diane, were all doing fine at Borgess Tuesday.
Mrs. Vorva was at her home at 10896 Miller Drive in Galesburg late Monday afternoon when she went into labor. She called her husband. Gerald, at General Motors Corp. where he is employed, and notified the Galesburg Ambulance Co. After that, “things just went too quickly,” she says.

Virgil Peck and Hay Martin returned from a local lake Tuesday evening with a big fish story to tell; and what’s more they had evidence to back up their story. While still fishing, Virgil hooked on to a whopper. After a give and take struggle for at least 10 minutes, the prize catch was hoisted into the boat. It was a 10 pound Pickerel, measuring 37 inches in length.

Climax Merchants Win 2 Out of 3
The Climax Merchants kept up their scorching pace this week by winning two games and coming very close to upsetting the Ramona Bears at Galesburg last Friday night. They fought toe to toe with the highly touted Bears, but finally had to take defeat 2-1.
The game was a close one, enjoyable to watch and a game that the losers as well as the winners can be very proud of.
Ed Rossi hurled for Climax and allowed only seven hits and struck out nine. The Bears managed to group three hits and one run in both the first and eighth innings.
Climax batters were held to four hits. Their run came in the fifth inning when Bob Smith connected with a slow curve ball and smashed it beyond the light pole in left center field for a home run. Climax committed four errors.
