International judges group honors ABA initiative

The American Bar Association Rule of Law initiative has been awarded the 2024 Judicial Independence Award by the International Association of Judges.

ROLI was honored for its long-standing engagement in defense of the values of rule of law and judicial independence and its programs aimed at strengthening legal institutions, supporting legal professionals, fostering respect for human rights and advancing public understanding of the law and of citizen rights.

“The International Association of Judges 2024 Judicial Independence Award recognizes the crucial work of ROLI’s dedicated staff in upholding the rule of law and judicial independence around the globe,” said ABA President Mary Smith. “This work has never been more important with autocrats and dictators threatening the rule of law. Through ROLI’s concerted efforts, the ABA ensures that democracies thrive through bolstering fair and impartial courts and protecting human rights where they are threatened.”

The IAJ, the largest organization of judges worldwide composed of national associations of 92 countries from all continents, noted ROLI’s “courage and the absolute commitment of its prestigious members.”
