The only contested race on the Climax Township Board in the August 6 Primary Election was won by Sarah DeBoer for the four-year clerk position.
Running under the Republican ticket, DeBoer received 255 votes (85.86 percent) while Murat Bates received 42 votes (14.14 percent).
Current Climax Township Clerk Marcia Lewis did not run for re-election.
DeBoer attributes a good old fashioned campaign effort to help her secure the win.
“I did everything I could to get my name out there and make people aware that there was a primary election coming up; everything from signs in yards to knocking on doors to marching in the Scotts Days Parade, to the widely read interview in the Climax Crescent. And, I had a lot of help from friends and neighbors who got the word out about the Primary. It was a lot of fun and I met a lot of great people,” said DeBoer.
While Bates has the option to run as a write-in candidate in the November General Election, he said he does not plan on running.
For the clerk’s race, there were 184 ballots cast election day, 109 absentee votes and four early voting ballots cast.
There were a number of write-in votes for many races throughout the county, including many in the Climax Township precinct, but Kalamazoo County Chief Deputy County Clerk and Register of Deeds John Curran said that does not mean all of those votes were cast for a declared write-in candidate.
There were 10 write-in votes for the clerk position on the Democrat ticket.
Four incumbents running for four-year seats on the Climax Township Board won uncontested races.
Current Supervisor Trent Piper received 267 votes and there were four write-in votes under the Republican ticket. There were also 10 write in votes on the Democrat ticket for the position.
Current Climax Township Treasurer Steven Walman received 270 votes on the Republican ticket for a four-year term. There were seven write-in votes for the position under the Democrat ticket.
Incumbent trustee Richard Thierjung received 267 votes. There were four write-in votes cast for the position under the Republican ticket.
Incumbent Cheryl Bates received 138 votes under the Democrat ticket. There were three write-ins filed for the position under the Democrat ticket.
