After discussing continuing a baseball co-op arrangement with Battle Creek St. Philip and Calhoun Christian at the July Board of Education meeting, the Climax-Scotts School Board approved a two-year arrangement with the two schools by a 4-1 margin (Steve Wurtzel and Trent Piper were absent and Lori Bagwell voted no) at its regular meeting August 19.
When there are three school districts involved in a co-op a school district has to go through a process with the Michigan High School Athletic Association every two years, requiring board action.
Climax-Scotts Athletic Director Tyler Langs said currently the co-op arrangement with Battle Creek St. Philip is important because the school district has helped maintain healthy participation numbers for C-S in baseball, while Calhoun Christian has a lower number of students currently participating.
He adds even without Calhoun Christian, C-S would still be competing in Division 3 in baseball.
In other school board related news, C-S Superintendent Doug Newington said recent rainy weather put outdoor work involved with the bond project a little behind, however there still has been significant progress.
Newington adds sidewalk cement pouring has begun. He said the district hopes sidewalk cement pouring from the road to the school will be completed next week. He said sidewalk cement pouring along the main drive leading to the school was scheduled to take place this week and then sidewalk cement pouring going to the football concession stand will follow.
He said the district received occupancy approval August 16 for the Jr./Sr. High School, where indoor bond work was taking place earlier in the summer, just in time for the start of school August 26.
