Court Renamed
The 36th District Court honored the late Judge Adam A. Shakoor by renaming the building The Honorable Adam A. Shakoor Judicial Center at a ceremony held Aug. 8. A reception was held afterward at the Gem Theater. Chief Judge William C. McConico (left) and City of Detroit Corporate Counsel and former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Conrad L. Mallett spoke during the ceremony. Shakoor was a former Detroit deputy mayor and served two terms as chief judge of the 36th District Court. He is considered the nation’s first Muslim judge. Shakoor died in 2022.
Shakoor was chief judge of the 36th District Court from 1986-1989. He graduated from Wayne State with a Bachelor of Science in 1971, a Master’s in Education in 1974, and a JD from Wayne State University Law School. (R) - Gayle Lawrence-Shakoor was in attendance to mark the renaming of the court in her husband’s honor.
