Coach encouraged with positive signs
in season opening win over Comstock

While it is very early in the season, Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball coach Jonica Klimp was impressed with how her team responded after making errors and executing some of her preseason coaching strategies in a 3-0 sweep over Comstock August 27 at G-A High School.

She felt her team was aggressive early, striving to earn points from serve to attack.

“In this early part of the season, the girls are learning from errors. The majority of Comstock’s points were from our own team’s service and hitting errors. We will continue to fine-tune each athlete at practice working towards the goal of competing with the powerhouses on our schedule this year,” said the Lady Ram coach.

Senior Jaidyn Klimp was a force at the net, while Lili Thompson and BreAnna Keene enjoyed a strong serving match. Klimp adds, “Suzanne Nichols is already showing that the setter needs to be a defender first, as she is leading in digs in the early season.”

Jaidyn Klimp enjoyed an all around strong match with 13 kills, three blocks, five digs, two aces and one assist. Thompson had a team high six aces, Addison Born had a team high six digs and Nichols led the team with 21 assists.

Raiders rush past Rams

By Dale Martin

In the season opener for both teams it was the rushing attack of the Decatur Raiders that proved too much for the Galesburg-Augusta varsity football team to overcome in a 54-19 loss to the Raiders August 29 on the road.

Danny Camarillo and Brody Mead lead the Raiders ground attack that piled up 308 yards, 277 in the first half. Meanwhile the Rams could muster just 30 rushing yards of their own.

Trailing 28-0  midway through the second quarter the Rams finally got on the board when Nolan Brewer tossed a 52-yard bomb to  Justin Martin.

G-A’s defense held on the next Raider possession and marched quickly, just 4 plays, to score just before halftime. A 42-yard Brewer to Jeremiah Mann pass gave the Rams a first down at the Decatur 10-yard line. Martin drove down to the three and C.J. Bernard sprinted around left end for the score. Owen Pfeiffer added the extra point kick and G-A now trailed 28-13.

The Rams had the ball to start the second half and hoped to build on their second quarter momentum. On just the third play of the second half Cameron Cropsey intercepted a Brewer pass at the 46-yard line and returned it all the way for a back breaking score. Brody Mead added the points after to give the Raiders a 36-13 lead.

G-A didn’t give in.

Martin returned the ensuing kickoff 23 yards to the Rams’ 43-yard line. G-A’s drive took them to the Decatur 18-yard line. Brewer was hit as he delivered a pass and had to sit out the next play. Patrick Armock stepped in and delivered an 18-yard touchdown strike to Mann, bringing the Rams closer at 36-19.

It took just three plays for Decatur to regain the momentum. Terry Rose connected on a pass over the middle to Camarillo and he took it down to the G-A  one-yard line. Mead finished the drive with a one-yard run and Rose added the points after to increase their lead to 44-19.

G-A’s next possession was a disaster. A botched kickoff return left the Rams at their own 14-yard line.  A holding penalty put them back to the 7-yard line. Attempting to throw, Brewer was sacked in the endzone resulting in a safety.

After the free kick the Raiders used four running plays to cover the 52 yards with Rylin Mead racing the final 24 yards for the final score of the game and a convincing 54-19 win.

While being held to 30 yards rushing on the night, G-A did pass for 144 yards with Brewer completing 7 passes for 126 yards. Jeremiah Mann caught 4 passes for 80 yards and Justin Martin caught 2 passes for 57 yards.

On defense it was Jonah Ranes and Mann leading the way with 8 tackles each. Dominic Corsi chipped in with 7 tackles, Martin had 6 and Brewer finished with 5.

The Rams open the home season on September 6th against Cassopolis at 7 p.m.
