Butzel will host the third iteration of its Education Industry Seminar on October 3 continuing the Seminar’s role as a virtual “think tank” for the industry. The Seminar was conceived and initiated in 2019 as a means of allowing Education Industry administrators to discuss and compare notes on the important issues facing them. The topics covered by the Seminar are a list of what keeps the industry up at night, including the past topics of: Crisis Management, Campus Investigations, Enrollment Strategies, Tenure Revocation, and Title IX.  The ideas discussed at the seminar are an insider’s guide to dealing with Education Industry concerns and include the latest experience from those on the front lines of these issues.

This year’s Seminar, on October 3, will be moderated by Butzel Education Industry Team Co-Chairs Lynn McGuire and Carey DeWitt will feature six distinguished panelists presenting on new and developing topics. The event will be hosted at Butzel’s Troy, Michigan office. Butzel has assembled education industry practitioners and leaders for an informative afternoon of learning and networking. Distinguished panelists will cover the following topics:   

• Campus Protests, Brian Quinn, Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel, Michigan State University

• Title IX Investigations, Brett Meyer, General Counsel, Grand Rapids Community College

• Hiring the President, Keith James, Attorney, Keith James, PLLC and Board of Trustees, Member, Albion College

• Board/Administration Relations, Eunice Jeffries, Executive Director, Government and Community Relations and Continuing Education at Oakland Community College and Regent, Board of Regents at Eastern Michigan
University

• Faculty Issues and Relations, Pamela Zarkowski, JD, MPH, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Detroit Mercy

• Student Discipline, Jeffrey Steele, General Counsel, Macomb Community College

These topics were selected because the Panelists themselves and Education Industry Administrators felt they were important based on what they are currently seeing. DeWitt commented, “We ask the panelists, all of whom work in the industry, and other administrators, ‘What are educational administrators most concerned about now that others in the industry would like to hear about and discuss?’  As a result, we have a very current and valuable program that contributes to thought leadership and industry development.”
