A building expansion and renovation project that was originally planned to start in 2023 at the Galesburg Hardings Market, is underway.

Galesburg Hardings Market Manager Sam Belen said the project will take place in phases and will begin with the store entrance. He said once the entrance is complete, work will take place in the front area outside where the sale wall is located. He said the entrance way renovation will take up to two months to complete and the front section renovation is expected to take another month.

Belen said the building expansion plan will remain the same, with approximately 600 square feet of additional space to the store planned, allowing store ownership to widen aisles and make other changes.

Belen said the same plan that was discussed last year, will pretty much remain the same. There are currently two aisles that are tight to navigate down, so one aisle will be removed. Belen said an additional aisle will be located in the area where the current produce section of the store is. The initial plan also had the location of the produce section moved into the newly constructed area in the front of the store. He adds there could be some changes to the plan once the outside work is completed and space availability is determined.

“The outside is going to look a lot more modern and the inside, there’s going to be more space up front and grow out,” said Belen.

Belen adds there is no timeline when the entire store renovation project will be completed.

Hardings Market ownership also purchased the property where the former PNC bank was located and has already turned that space into additional parking.
