Positive growth continues for Panthers entering second half of the season

By Bruce Rolfe

With the toughest portion of the regular season schedule approaching, Climax-Scotts varsity football coach Tyler Langs has seen a lot of growth he hopes will continue in a week six game at Athens (0-5) October 4 at 7 p.m.

Langs has been especially pleased how his team has stepped up its play on both sides of the ball, something that will be crucial against Bellevue (4-1), Mendon (5-0), and Pittsford (4-1) in the final three regular season games.

“We’re doing a better job as the season moves on of eliminating those mistakes. But we could be better. But we want to be playing our best ball, right now, going into these last couple of weeks,” said the Panther coach.

While the impressive offensive and defensive numbers were present again in Climax-Scotts’ 66-12 win over Battle Creek St. Philip September 28 at C.W. Post Field in Battle Creek, the Panthers showed another weapon.

The C-S defense came up with five interceptions.

“What we haven’t done the last couple of weeks is make some plays. Our defensive backs, our defensive line, we made some plays. So that is a big deal to us because within our schemes, and what we do, we’re solid. We need kids to make big plays and tonight our kids stepped up,” offered Langs.

Senior Chase VanMiddlesworth feels building on the positive play the team has enjoyed during a four-game winning streak that leaves the team with a 4-1 record, will be important moving forward.

“We all have a lot of chemistry. We’ve been playing together our whole life and I think that just makes it easier for us to compete on the field with better teams. We are half way through the season. Our last few games are some tough games and we’re preparing for that,” said VanMiddlesworth.

It’s been hard for opponents to slow down the Panther running game lately but the Panthers threw the entire package at Battle Creek St. Philip.

C-S racked up 567 yards in total offense including 464 yards on the ground and 103 more yards through the air.

The Tigers, now 3-2, enjoyed most of their success through the air.

The Panther offensive line consistently opened big holes for Panther backs for big gains as C-S had 18 runs of seven yards or more in the contest.

C-S moved out to a 16-0 lead after one quarter on a 36-yard touchdown run by Luke Lawrence (Logan Gilbert ran in the two-point conversion) and a six-yard touchdown strike from Gilbert to Chase VanMiddlesworth (Liam LaSala ran in the two-point conversion).

Jackson Bagwell answered a St. Phil touchdown early in the second quarter (quarterback Colt Myers to Brogan Lightfoot covering 22 yards) with a 33-yard burst (Gilbert ran in the two-point conversion) for a 24-6 C-S lead at the 9:49 mark.

A Chase VanMiddlesworth interception with 7:52 left in the second quarter set up C-S’ next score nine seconds later when Gilbert tossed a perfect pass into the hands of Luke Lawrence for a 45-yard touchdown pass play (the two-point conversion was no good).

Another interception by VanMiddlesworth moments later set up C-S’ next score when Bagwell found an open hole and out ran the St. Phil secondary for a 65-yard touchdown run at the 6:11 mark (Gilbert passed to Logan LaSala for the two-point conversion) and 38-6 C-S lead.

Maddox Wyman claimed C-S’ third interception of the quarter, setting up C-S’ fourth touchdown of the quarter with 5:29 left in the frame.

Bagwell finished a five-play, 63-yard drive that took just 2:21 with a six-yard touchdown run and Liam LaSala’s two-point conversion run gave C-S a 46-6 lead at halftime.

Bagwell claimed C-S’ fourth interception of the quarter just before halftime.

The C-S offensive onslaught continued in the third quarter when Lawrence, on a 39-yard run (Liam LaSala kicked the extra point) and LaSala, on a 17-yard run (LaSala kicked the extra point), sandwiched touchdown runs around a five-yard touchdown by St. Phil on a Colt Myers to Carter Dzwik five-yard touchdown pass (the two-point conversion was no good) for a 60-12 Panther lead after three quarters.

A 20-yard touchdown run by Dane Sattler with 8:40 left (the two-point conversion was no good) completed the scoring for C-S.

Late in the game freshman Brody Vosburg came up with an interception.

Bagwell finished with 190 yards on seven carries, Lawrence added 141 yards on eight carries, VanMiddlesworth had three catches totaling 54 yards with one receiving touchdown and two interceptions and Gilbert was a perfect five-for-five for 103 yards passing and two touchdown strikes.

Bagwell added nine solo tackles and one interception, and Jordan Grove contributed 5.5 tackles including three solo tackles, one tackle for a loss and 1.5 sacks.
