Law school to host 25th Annual McElroy Lecture

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will present the 25th Annual McElroy Lecture on Thursday, October 24, from 5 to 6 p.m. in room 226 on campus, 651 East Jefferson Avenue Detroit. Reception immediately following the lecture will take place in the atrium.

This year’s lecture, titled “Global Islamophobia, Lawfare and Warfare in the Mideast” will be presented by Khaled A. Beydoun.  A scholar on constitution law, security and Islamophobia, Beydoun will examine how the War on Terror has expanded into a transnational legal and discursive projecting sanctioning Islamophobia against Muslim populations globally, which now spirals the Middle East into regional war.

Beydoun serves as a law professor at the Arizona State University Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and a Scholar-in-Residence at the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University. Professor Beydoun is author of the book “American Islamophobia: Understanding the Roots and Rise of Fear,” co-editor of “Islamophobia and the Law” – published by University of Cambridge Press, and author of “The New Crusades: Islamophobia and the Global War on Muslims.”

Beydoun is a native of Detroit  and earned degrees from the University of Michigan, the University of Toronto, UCLA, and Harvard.

The McElroy Lecture Series seeks to educate students, legal professionals and the wider public on a variety of questions related to moral philosophy, freedom of conscience, the interaction of legal and religious institutions and the role of religion in public life.
