G-A halls to Saugatuck

By Dale Martin

The Galesburg-Augusta varsity football team never recovered from Saugatuck’s quick start in a 52-14 loss to the Trailblazers October 4 on the road.

It took just one play for Saugatuck to get on the scoreboard as Cass Stanberry raced around his right end, evaded three G-A defenders enroute to a 70 yard touchdown. Cam Lewis added the first of seven successful point after kicks and the Trailblazers had a 7-0 lead just 30 seconds into the game.

G-A’s first possession was halted when a Nolan Brewer pass was intercepted and returned to the G-A 30-yard line. Five plays later Stanberry scored again, this time on a 10 yard run.

G-A’s next possession was unsuccessful and Owen Pfeiffer’s punt gave Saugatuck the ball at its own 47-yard line. They drove down to the Ram 33-yard line where the defense dug in and forced the Trailblazers into a fourth and 13 situation. Stanberry avoided the rush and connected with Carter Miller in the endzone, giving Saugatuck a 21-0 lead late in the first quarter.

G-A started its next possession at its own 10-yard line. Levi Born rushed for 15 and 9 yards and a 23 yard scramble by Brewer moved the ball down to the Saugatuck 24-yard line. On third down Born bulled his way for 9 yards, leaving the Rams in a fourth and two.  On the fourth down try Giovanni Evans was caught for no gain and the possession turned over to the Trailblazers.

The hosts then drove 80 yards in 9 plays with Chris Folley covering the final 29 yards.

Now trailing 28-0 the Rams started their final possession of the half at their 23-yard line. Evans rushed for 10 yards. Jeremiah Mann caught Brewer passes for 9 and 22 yards. Evans finished the drive with a 15 yard run for the score. Pfeiffer added the point after kick and the teams went into halftime with Saugatuck in the lead 28-7.

On the second play of the second half a Brewer pass was intercepted and returned to the G-A 9-yard line. Chris Foley needed just one play to increase the Trailblazer’s lead to 35-7 with only a minute off the clock.

G-A started the next drive at its own 20. Twelve plays later they were at the Saugatuck 14-yard line. A 41-yard run by Born, a 15-yard keeper by Brewer and a 22-yard pass to Jonah Ranes highlighted the drive. Unfortunately, the next three plays found the Rams facing a fourth and seven situation. Brewer couldn’t find anyone open so he tucked the ball under his arm and somehow found his way into the endzone. A late flag was thrown and the touchdown was nullified. Playing the down over Brewer’s pass to Ethan Thomas was broken up at the goal line and the Ram drive was ended.

The Trailblazers took ten plays to drive down to the Ram 9-yard line. The defense held and on the first play of the fourth quarter Cam Lewis hit a 26-yard field goal.

G-A was held to a three and out on its next drive. Pfeiffer’s 51 yard punt forced Saugatuck to start its next drive at its own 17-yard line. Still playing their first string players, Saugatuck’s Stanberry called his own number on the first play and outran the defenders for an 83 yard score.

The Rams didn’t give in as they went on a 13 play, 78-yard drive with Ranes scoring from the one yard line with 52 seconds left on the clock.

Pfeiffer sailed the ensuing kickoff down to the Trailblazers 5-yard line. Stanberry picked the ball up and raced up the middle of the field for a 95-yard touchdown giving Saugatuck (5-1) a 52-14 win.

The Rams were outrushed 357 to 229. Born led the Rams with 82 yards on 13 carries. Brewer added 72 yards and Evans contributed 49 yards. Mann caught 3 of Brewer’s passes for 46 yards.

Jonah Ranes was a standout on defense with 15 tackles on the night. Dominic Corsi had 6 tackles and Bradlee Hubbard chipped in with 5.

Next up for the Rams (2-4) is homecoming against the Panthers of Delton on Oct 11th at Maskill Field.
