Panthers will enter first home game
with momentum
After traveling over 456 miles to six different locations for the first six games of the season, the Climax-Scotts varsity football team is finally returning home October 11 for a 7 p.m. homecoming clash against Bellevue (4-2).
The Panthers will take a 5-1 record and five-game winning streak into the first home game of the season after the team registered a 65-0 win over Athens October 4 at Athens.
C-S has traveled to Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian, Gaylord St. Mary’s, where the team faced Newberry in a neutral site contest, Adrian Lenawee Christian High School, Colon, C.W. Post Field in Battle Creek to face Battle Creek St. Philip and Athens.
C-S coach Tyler Langs said closing out the regular season in the friendly confines of Big Blue Stadium is something his team is looking forward to.
“It’s for the seniors. They get to finish their senior season with three straight home games. They have battled on the road and done an awesome job. Being able to be home and be comfortable for the seniors there for the last couple of days, and the last couple of games that are the toughest ones we’ve probably seen all year, that’s exciting,” said the Panther coach.
The three opponents C-S will face at home to end the regular season are expected to provide some very tough competition. Bellevue (4-2), Mendon (6-0) and Pittsford (5-1) have a combined record of 15-3 entering week no. 7.
“Bellevue and Mendon, the next two weeks, we’ve got to be as physical as we’ve ever been. Execute. We’ve got to make sure we don’t turn the ball over. That’s a big one against those two good teams. We hope that we can match their physicality and keep the ball off the turf and see what happens,” adds Langs.
C-S dominated on both sides of the ball at Athens, rolling up 482 yards in total offense while allowing Athens just 54 total yards.
The 65-point outburst matches the 65 points C-S scored against Lakeside Danbury, Ohio in 2022.
Bolstered by five first quarter touchdowns and two more in the second quarter, C-S raced out to a 33-0 lead after one quarter and a 46-0 advantage at halftime, allowing Panther coach Tyler Langs to give some of his younger varsity players and JV players over a half of action.
It took C-S just two plays to begin its offensive explosion. Quarterback Logan Gilbert rolled to his right and threw a short pass to Chase VanMiddlesworth, who used his speed to outrun the Athens secondary for a 47-yard touchdown just 47 seconds into the game. Liam LaSala’s extra point attempt was blocked.
A 65-yard touchdown run by Jackson Bagwell (Liam LaSala’s extra point kick was good), a 16-yard touchdown run by Luke Lawrence immediately after Hunter LaSala recovered a fumble (Liam LaSala kicked the extra point), a Gilbert to Hunter LaSala touchdown strike covering 29 yards (the extra point attempt was blocked) and a 48-yard touchdown run by Bagwell two plays after Chase VanMiddlesworth came up with an interception (Liam LaSala’s kick was good) gave C-S a 33-0 lead after one quarter.
A 27-yard touchdown run by Luke Lawrence followed by an extra point kick by Liam LaSala at the 11:10 mark of the second quarter gave the Panthers a 40-0 cushion.
C-S’ potent offense struck again moments after the Panther defense held Athens to two yards on its next drive. Dane Sattler followed a Max Wurtzel five-yard pick up with a 54-yard touchdown scamper with 7:50 left in the second quarter (the two-point conversion attempt was no good) and C-S enjoyed a 46-0 lead at halftime.
The Panthers had 106 yards passing and 236 yards rushing in the first half.
With a running clock in the second half and Athens starting the second half with the ball, C-S only had one possession. The visitors came through when Bagwell found a nice hole created by the offensive line and ran 25 yards for a touchdown at the 2:49 mark (Liam LaSala’s extra point kick was no good) and a 52-0 lead after three quarters.
An interception by Maddox Wyman on the third play of the fourth quarter set up C-S’ next score, a 67-yard touchdown run by Max Wurtzel with 8:50 left in the game (Liam LaSala kicked the extra point).
A fumble recovery by C-S on the Athens 22-yard line set up the Panthers’ last touchdown. Max Wurtzel found another big hole on the first play from scrimmage and motored 22 yards for a touchdown with 1:10 left in the game (the extra point kick was no good) for the final score.
The C-S ground game, which totaled 376 yards, was led by Jackson Bagwell’s 142 yards on four carries. Luke Lawrence added 78 yards on six carries, Max Wurtzel had 95 yards on five carries, and Dane Sattler added 63 yards on four carries.
Chase VanMiddlesworth had two catches for 66 yards, Hunter LaSala had one catch for 29 yards and Logan Gilbert was three-for-three passing for 95 yards and two touchdown strikes.
Liam LaSala had nine tackles, including seven solo tackles, Lawrence had 5.5 tackles and .5 quarterback sacks, Maddox Wyman had six tackles, including five solo tackles to go with an interception and Bagwell added five tackles including one tackle for a loss.
