Constantine Takes G-A In 3 Games

Constantine handed the Lady Rams a loss October 10 at G-A High School in three games, 25-14, 26-24, 25-15.

“We knew they were going to be a hard team to beat going into the match. When this group of athletes is zoned in and focused, I believe they can go head-to-head against anybody. We saw that in set 2 against the Falcons. This was by far our best set of the night. They tightened up the defense and stayed alert and active through every point. More consistent serving would have won us this set,” points out coach Jonica Klimp.

Jaidyn Klimp had nine kills, seven digs and three blocks, Suzanne Nichols had 12 assists, and Lily Gilbert had seven digs.

G-A gets big win over Delton-Kellogg

By Dale Martin

Last Friday the Rams ended a three game winless streak with a 35-16 win over the Panthers of Delton-Kellogg to the delight of a large homecoming crowd at Maskill Field.

Giovanni Evans returned the opening kickoff 28 yards to the Delton-Kellogg 47-yard line. Eleven plays later Evans covered the final three yards for the game’s first score. Evans added the two-point conversion on a run and the Rams led 8-0 half way through the first quarter.

Owen Pfeiffer’s kickoff sailed into the end zone so Delton-Kellogg started its first drive of the game at its own 20-yard line. Three running plays gave them a first down at the 47-yard line. Tucker Tack tossed a short sideline pass that was intercepted by Ethan Thomas. A late hit out-of-bounds gave G-A the ball at the Panther’s 31-yard line.  Nolan Brewer scored from the one on a quarterback sneak, Pfeiffer added the point after kick and the Rams held a 15-0 lead with a minute and a half left in the quarter.

Delton-Kellogg started its second possession of the game on its own 15-yard line. They went on a 85-yard drive with Tack scoring from the one-yard line. Tack passed to Ezra Smith for the two-point conversion cutting the Rams lead to 15-8 with two and a half minutes to play in the half. The 22 play Delton drive consumed twelve minutes.

The Rams wasted little time. Levi Born returned the ensuing kickoff 22 yards to the G-A 35-yard line. A 10 yard run by Jonah Ranes, two short pass completions by Brewer to Thomas and Jeremiah Mann and a 12-yard run by Brewer put the Rams on the Delton 40-yard line. On the next play Brewer tossed a perfect pass to Ranes who raced untouched into the endzone for another Ram touchdown. Pfeiffer added the point after kick, giving G-A a 22-8 halftime lead.

Two Ram penalties and 8 straight Delton running plays carried the Panthers to the G-A 23-yard line. The defense stiffened and held ground on a fourth and four giving the ball back to the Rams at their own 23-yard line.

A quick three and out and a short punt put the Panthers back in business at the G-A 40-yard line. Two Tack completions of 12 and 19 yards gave Delton a first down at the G-A two yard line. Menden Phillips scored on the next play and Tack passed to Mason Ferris for the conversion and the Ram lead was cut to 22-16 with two and a half minutes to play in the third quarter.

It took the Rams just four plays and a minute to score this time. Evans’ 19-yard kickoff return set G-A up at its own 35-yard line. After a three yard run by Born and an eight yard completion to Evans, Brewer called his own number and raced around left end on a keeper of 52 yards and a first down at the Delton-Kellogg two. Born scored on the next play and the G-A’s lead swelled to 28-16.

Moving into the fourth period the Ram defense forced Delton-Kellogg to punt and the Rams were back in control at their own 46-yard line. G-A covered the 54 yards in eight plays, Brewer’s 27-yard run giving them a first down at the Delton-Kellogg nine.  On a fourth and one Brewer sprinted around left end the final yard for a score. Pfeiffer added the point after kick and the Rams were in complete control, 35-16 with six minutes remaining in the game.

Delton-Kellogg managed to move the ball down to the G-A 27-yard line but were stopped, giving the ball back to G-A with one minute on the game clock. The Rams ran out the clock, preserving the much needed win.

G-A’s offense was led by Nolan Brewer. He rushed 8 times for 117 yards and completed 5 passes for 60 yards. Born had 43 yards rushing and Ranes picked up 33.

The defense was led by Jonah Ranes. He collected 18 tackles and two quarterback sacks. Born, Anakin Jordan and Dominic Corsi each recorded 10 tackles.

On Oct 18th G-A (3-4) will travel to Coloma (2-5) and Delton(1-6) will host Schoolcraft.
