G-A volleyball team displays positive play but can’t close out C-S
By Bruce Rolfe
After winning the first two games and being on what seemed like well on the way to sweeping the Climax-Scotts varsity volleyball team, Galesburg-Augusta ultimately couldn’t overcome mistakes and a gritty Lady Panther team, falling in five games, 25-12, 25-22, 24-26, 23-25, 11-15 Monday at C-S Jr.Sr. High School.
G-A enjoyed stretches of strong play at the net, and defensively by bringing back many hard hit C-S balls, but Ram coach Jonica Klimp felt ultimately her team committed too many errors.
“Climax-Scotts are fighters. We saw that. We just had trouble with errors. That’s been our battle the whole time. Serving errors, passing errors, hitting errors. There were some good things. We had some great hits and we had some great offensive plays,” said the Ram coach.
With Lily Gilbert serving, G-A zoomed out to a 7-0 lead and dominated the first game. G-A’s largest lead was 13 points twice, 24-11 and the final score.
The second game was much closer, with G-A rallying late to earn a 25-22 victory.
C-S led 18-14, however a kill by BreAnna Keene sparked a 4-0 run that tied the game 18-18.
C-S moved in front 20-18, however the Rams closed the second game with a 5-2 run.
The Lady Rams appeared to be headed towards the win in the third game, moving in front 22-15 before C-S mounted a comeback.
C-S caught G-A 24-24 on a Ram hitting error and then the home team closed out the 26-24 win by scoring the next two points including another G-A hitting error on the final point.
The fourth set was close as well, however C-S led most of the way after breaking a 10-10 tie with four straight points.
The Rams caught C-S and tied the game 21-21, however the home team finished off the 25-23 win after G-A pulled to 24-23.
G-A took an 11-9 lead in the fifth and deciding game, however C-S closed out the game and match by scoring the next six points.
G-A senior Jaidyn Klimp had a huge game, totaling 26 kills to go with 23 digs and four blocks, Suzanne Nichols, who earned her 1000th career assist in the first game, racked up 40 assists to go with 18 digs, Lily Gilbert had 19 digs along with five aces, Megan Ranes had 17 kills and Addison Born had 19 digs.
G-A will host Lawton in the district opener November 4 at 5 p.m.

Cade Hahn passed to Grayson Knox for the two points giving the visiting Rams an 8-0 lead five minutes into the game on the way to a 36-22 win over the Galesburg-Augusta varsity football team last Friday in the season finale on senior-parent night at Maskill Field.
The Rams, the Galesburg-Augusta variety, embarked on a long drive of their own. Moving from their own 38 yard line they moved down to the South Haven 21 yard line. On a fourth down play a Nolan Brewer pass was picked off by Eddy who after breaking a few tackles, raced 85 yards down the sideline for another score. Quin Hayes added the two points giving South Haven a 16-0 edge with three minutes remaining in the quarter.
After three and outs by both teams, G-A went on a thirteen play drive from its own 20-yard line down to the South Haven 19-yard line. From there it was Jonah Ranes that scored G-A’s first touchdown. Levi Born added the two point conversion on a run and G-A was back in the game trailing 16-8 with five minutes to go in the first half.
Starting from its own 20-yard line, South Haven was called for holding, pushing them back to the 10-yard line. On the next play Cade Hahn tossed a short side line pass to Eddy. He then broke a couple of tackles and 90 yards later was in the endzone again.
