Loss to Mendon in playoff opener is disappointing,
but C-S enjoyed good season
By Bruce Rolfe
While last Friday’s 58-50 playoff opening loss to Mendon in the final seconds was disappointing, the Climax-Scotts varsity football team can still look back on a very satisfying season.
C-S, which completes the season with an 8-2 record, showed great character and determination, starting after the first game of the season when the team rebounded from a season opening loss to Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian by winning the rest of their regular season games entering the playoff opener with Mendon.
It was also a school record breaking season for senior Luke Lawrence. In his career, Lawrence rushed for an 8-man career rushing school record 3854 yards. His 61 career rushing touchdowns is also a school record for 8-man football at C-S. The C-S senior also recorded an overall single game school record (11-man) tying and school record breaking 339 yards on 13 carries for eight-man football at C-S in the final regular season game against Pittsford. Connor Gibson holds the 8-man single season school record with 1754 yards on 207 carries, set in 2019.
When this team faced challenges, they answered by executing in areas they may have been falling short in, which impressed C-S coach Tyler Langs.
“It’s been a great season. Sometimes at C-S we get spoiled and we take it for granted, some of the seasons. But it was a year that we grew as the year went on and the kids got better and better. We had some kids step up in key moments in a lot of different games. It’s been an awesome year,” said Langs.
It was an especially hard way to end the season for a group of seniors who offered great leadership and helped C-S compile a 32-9 record and five playoff games over the course of four years they were in high school.
C-S seniors on the roster include Logan Gilbert, Luke Lawrence, Cole Curtis, Chase VanMiddlesworth, Jackson Bagwell, Carter Pio, DeShon Newton, Jordan Grove, Jose Espino-Sotelo, Sam Bleeker and Brayan Simbron-Malerva.
“It’s been a group, I’ve enjoyed four years with them. I just can’t get a better group of kids. I wish the result was better for them. They fought and it’s been an awesome four years with these seniors for sure,” said Langs.
“I have a crazy bond with those guys. I’ve been playing with them since I was a little kid. I’ve seen success, I’ve seen not so successful years. And we’ve battled through all those years together. It’s bitter-sweet at the end of our senior season to have all these memories accumulate into this one moment for our last football game,” adds senior Sam Bleeker.
After Climax-Scotts scored a late touchdown to secure a 46-44 regular season classic in a week number eight win over Mendon, the Hornets delivered a season ending blow in the final seconds Friday to post a 58-50 win over the Panthers in the regional semifinal at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

Mendon, now 9-1, will face Martin (9-1), 52-22 winners over Gobles last Friday, in the regional championship game at Mendon November 8 or 9.
Mendon’s Owen Gorham scored on a three-yard burst up the middle with 3.7 seconds left to snap a 50-50 tie and then the Hornet junior ran in the two-point conversion for the final score.
C-S recovered a short kick at its own 46-yard line and managed one pass that fell incomplete as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
“Sometimes games go like this. In the game of football, who ends with the ball, the last one with the ball in their hands. When you have two teams with really good offenses, it’s who ends up with the ball at the end,” said Bleeker.
Langs said he told the team at halftime all he was looking for in the second half was an all out effort and he felt he got that.
“Two good football teams. Our last two meetings have been two classic games. I told the kids in the second half, if you’re going to go down, go down swinging. Our boys played hard to the end and fought. We just didn’t get the plays that we needed. Not for lack of effort, not for lack of toughness, not for lack of those things. The ball just didn’t roll our way at times. I’m proud of the boys. They busted their tails. Great group of kids,” said Langs.
The playoff opener brought similarities to the regular season matchup between the two rivals, with both teams displaying their offensive capabilities often.
Mendon’s offensive line proved to be a key, opening up holes that allowed Hornet backs to enjoy many big yard pick ups. Mendon piled up 504 yards in total offense, all on the ground.
C-S’ offensive line stood tall as well, as Panther backs rushed for 359 yards.
C-S quickly erased a 30-14 halftime deficit in the third quarter.
A 45-yard touchdown by C-S Lawrence and two-point conversion by the Panther senior to start the second half got C-S back into the game just nine seconds into the third quarter. A fumble recovery by Ryan Pejakovich on the Mendon 36-yard line with 9:42 left in the third quarter set up C-S’ next score.
Lawrence scored from two yards out and then he ran in the two-point conversion to even the score at 30-30 at the 5:19 mark.
Mendon responded with an eight-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion with 1:35 left in the third quarter, giving the visitors a 38-30 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Panthers came right back, as Lawrence began the scoring drive that started late in the third quarter with a 27-yard run and then completed the 54-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run five seconds into the fourth quarter (the two-point conversion failed) and C-S trailed 38-36.
Mendon answered with a two-yard touchdown run with 8:50 left in the fourth quarter, however the two-point conversion was no good and Mendon led by a 44-36 count.
It took just one play for C-S to score after a short Mendon squib kick. Lawrence found a big hole created by the Panther offensive line and motored 49 yards for a touchdown with 8:33 left in the fourth quarter to pull C-S to within 44-42 (the two-point conversion was no good).
Mendon’s ground game dominated the next scoring drive that was culminated with a one-yard touchdown run with 5:30 remaining, however the Panther defense stopped the two-point conversion attempt and Mendon led 50-42.
Another short kick on the ground by Mendon gave C-S the ball in good field position at its own 44-yard line. A big 35-yard pickup by Lawrence gave the Panthers the ball at the Mendon 21-yard line.
Mendon’s defense stalled the Panthers momentarily, following a big 35-yard pickup by Lawrence. However the resilient Panthers were able to keep the drive alive on a fourth and four play when Logan Gilbert completed a short pass to Lawrence for an eight-yard pickup that put the home team on the Mendon seven-yard line.
C-S senior Jackson Bagwell finished the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run with 2:55 remaining and then Lawrence ran in the important two-point conversion attempt to knot the game at 50-50, setting up the wild finish.
A 29-yard touchdown run by Mendon with 8:30 left in the first quarter (the two point conversion was good) and a one-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion sandwiched around a 61-yard touchdown run by Lawrence at the 8:19 mark (the two-point conversion failed) gave Mendon a 16-6 lead after one quarter.
Mendon seized some momentum in the second quarter with a five-yard touchdown run with 6:28 left in the quarter (the two-point conversion failed), giving the Hornets a 22-6 lead.
C-S answered quickly when Lawrence, after finding a big hole that led to a 48-yard pickup, finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run line with 5:17 left, pulling C-S to within 22-12. Jackson Bagwell ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-14 deficit.
Mendon grabbed the momentum back with a late two-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion with 11.2 seconds left, giving Mendon a 30-14 halftime lead.
Luke Lawrence finished his senior season strong, rushing for 270 yards on 15 carries while adding seven tackles. For the season, Lawrence fell just short of the school record in 8-man football for rushing yards in a season, finishing with 1618 yards in 10 games and 30 touchdowns. It is believed Adam Schantz holds the single season school record in 11-man football in both categories with 1688 yards on 130 carries in 12 games and 31 rushing touchdowns. He added two pass receptions for touchdowns and finished with 34 total touchdowns.
Nick Ludwig owns the school record for career rushing yards in 11-man football at 4095 yards on 389 carries over 47 games from 2003-2006. He finished with 63 touchdowns.
Jackson Bagwell added 78 yards on 10 carries with 12 tackles. Defensive back Maddox Wyman had 12 tackles, and Chase VanMiddlesworth and Liam LaSala each added nine tackles.
C-S finished with 366 yards in total offense, with just seven yards passing. Mendon finished with 30 first downs to C-S’ eight.
