A power outage November 11 forced Climax-Scotts School officials to cancel school at the Jr./Sr. High November 12.
According to the school district power, was partially restored, allowing the school district to resume school as scheduled November 13, however a similar outage at the intermediate school occurred later in the week.
The school district said power was shut down in the afternoon of November 15 to complete a repair, however C-S Superintendent of Schools Doug Newington said another section of the wiring going to the intermediate school shorted out. He said the wiring going to the intermediate school is very old and is the source of the outage, which he said has occurred two previous times.
Newington said the school district owns the transformers at the intermediate school, meaning the school district will be responsible for all costs.
The district is in the process of repairing the wiring, as soon as the needed parts arrive. They will also be installing a fuse that will allow the power to remain on at the Jr/Sr High School if there is a similar problem in the future.
If the breaker shuts down again, the power to the Jr./Sr. High School will not be impacted because Consumers Energy would not have to deenergize all of the lines that would require a campus-wide outage, instead just shutting down the intermediate school.
The C-S Superintendent said the school district will have to eventually make some long term plans to solve the issue, noting the old cable is buried under the intermediate school parking lot.
Consumers Energy recommended installing new utility poles the new wiring would be placed on before entering the building through the ground next to the school.
Communications Program Update
Communications Director Heather Wechsler offered an extensive overview of the district’s new website and mobile app.
The website and mobile app provides alerts, schedules, bond project updates, calendar of events, transportation department alerts, meeting and athletic event schedules and much more.
Newington said the goal has been to improve the district’s communication with parents, students and staff in a quick and efficient manner.
Bond Project Update
C-S Superintendent of Schools Doug Newington gave the board and audience an update on bond work being performed at the Scotts Elementary School and Jr./Sr. High School. He said the new multi-purpose room walls at the elementary school in Scotts should be in place by approximately December 6. The roof is scheduled to be installed between December 9 - 30. Work can then be performed inside throughout the winter.
The additional classroom walls are expected to be installed sometime in early January. The roof is expected to be installed anywhere between mid-January to early February. Work indoors in the new classrooms is expected to begin in early February, 2025.
At the Jr./Sr. High School, the baseball and softball fields should be completed the first week of December. Press boxes and dugouts are expected to be completed in mid-December. The sidewalks are scheduled to be completed November 30.
The intermediate school practice field continues to be a work in progress as the school district finalizes plans for the area. Bids could go out in late December with work starting in March. Newington said the district still has some funds that can be used on the intermediate school practice field project.
