Snowy and unpleasant weather conditions didn’t stop an army of good intentioned people from helping a local woman battling cancer and facing large medical expenses at the People Helping People fundraiser November 30 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
People Helping People organizer Julie Tiller said $4,100 was raised at the event to help this year’s recipient, Beth Sowles, with her medical expenses.
Sowles, a 1978 Climax-Scotts graduate and Climax resident, has been battling cancer since 1984. With her newest cancer diagnoses in 2023, she has struggled to make ends meet. She recently had a stroke in September that has added more stress and more expense.
She said with medical and household bills adding up, the $4,100 raised relieves a lot of stress for her. She was very grateful for the vendors, craft makers, shoppers, groups, and organizations that helped out and for Tiller who helped make the fundraiser such a big success.
“I am so overwhelmed and grateful, blessed and thankful. The fact that those bills are all going to get paid, means so much to me,” said Sowles.
The hallways and cafetorium at C-S Jr./Sr. High School were filled with vendors craft makers.
Tiller said while some of the expected 120 crafters and vendors did not attend because of the poor weather, they still sent money for the cause. She adds one vendor drove to the event to tell her they couldn’t come because of issues with their equipment but still made a donation.
There are no contracts or booth fees, however each vendor is given an envelope on the day of the event. Near the end of the event, each vendor chooses how much of their sales they made during the craft show they want to donate back for the recipient in need. There was also a 6 foot stocking that vendors could put their envelopes in. The shoppers are also able to contribute by putting their donation in the stocking.
The Climax-Scotts Boys Basketball team served a little over 100 sloppy joe lunches and helped the vendors unload and reload their vehicles. They raised over $1200 and donated to the cause. The Scotts Busy Youth 4-H group sold baked goods and raised over $800 and donated to help Beth Sowles with her medical expenses. The Climax-Scotts Band Boosters served concessions and also donated back to the cause. Santa, also known as Stanley Rupert, handed out frosted sugar cookies donated by L&J Creations.
“I am just so blessed by what Julie did,” adds Sowles.
With last weekend’s donation, to date approximately $50,000 has been donated.
