Fatality in single vehicle accident in Climax Township

A one-vehicle accident November 26 in Climax Township left one person dead and one hospitalized with unknown injuries.

Climax Township Fire Chief Scott Smith said the local fire department was dispatched at 1:44 p.m. to the 16600 block of R Avenue.

According to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department the vehicle an elderly married couple were in ran off the roadway and struck a tree. The Sheriff’s Department said road, weather conditions, and alcohol are not suspected as being factors.  

The Sheriff Department said the 81 year old female passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department adds the 84-year-old male driver was transported to Bronson Hospital and admitted into the Trauma Care Unit.

While no names are being released at this time, the Sheriff’s Department said the couple is from Scotts.

The crash is still under investigation.

Leroy Township and Pavilion Township Fire Departments and Life EMS, with two ambulances, assisted at the scene.

Smith said local fire departments had to use extrication equipment to remove a male and female from the vehicle.
