By Dale Martin

The Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team started the season with a 68-50 loss at Saugatuck December 6.

G-A jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a three pointer by Lili Thompson and a put back under the basket by Jaidyn Klimp. Saugatuck countered with a pair of threes and a free throw to take a 7-5 lead three minutes into the quarter. The Ram offense struggled scoring the rest of the quarter managing just one more basket, a long two pointer from Brooklyn James, and two free throws each from Klimp and Thompson.

The Trailblazers hit three more threes and held a 22-11 first quarter lead.

In the second period G-A was held to just three baskets, one each from  Klimp, James and Grace Gibson.

Saugatuck, which finished 22-2 last season, hit a trio of threes and outscored the Rams 19-6 giving the home team a 41-17 halftime lead.

The teams played even in the third quarter with Gibson and Klimp getting a pair of inside baskets, freshman Jenisyn Klimp scoring her first varsity points and a pair of free throws from Ellesa Callender. The teams entered the fourth quarter with the Trailblazers in control 54-30.

G-A finally found the range as the Rams hit 4 of 5 three pointers. Thompson hit two and Gibson and James each scored one. Klimp had two more inside scores giving her a team high of 14 points. Gibson and Callender each scored in close giving the Rams a 20 point fourth quarter but not enough to catch the Trailblazers, falling 68-50.

The Rams had a balanced attack as Gibson and Thompson each scored 11 points and James added 7 to compliment Klimp’s 14.

G-A rebound leaders were Klimp with 11, Gibson with 7, Rhyann Wilson grabbed 6 and James and Callender pulled down 5 each.
