While the flow of the game was interrupted often because of poor shooting, fouls and turnover challenges, the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team put together a strong segment of play late in the fourth quarter to close out Athens in a 44-30 win December 6 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

The first few games typically can bring higher turnover numbers, mistakes, and low shooting percentages, which is what the fans saw Friday.

C-S shot 27 percent overall (16-55) from the floor including a 1-for-6 effort from the three-point line.

Athens shot 29.7 percent overall (11-37) overall from the floor.

C-S finished with 22 turnovers while Athens turned the ball over 18 times.

“We’re still coming into our own. We’re still trying to get into shape. There’s a short few weeks here before our first game (for practivce), so we’ve got to stay mentally strong when the body starts shutting down. We’ll soon get into shape, just keep working
through some stuff and try to keep growing and blossoming,” said C-S coach Chip Paddock.

Despite a high turnover rate and some long stretches of cold shooting, the Lady Panthers flashed some positive signs, working the ball around nicely and finding open players inside for good looks, however multiple times hurrying a shot or turning the ball over prevented the home team from finishing.

“We want to push the pace this year. I thought our transition game looked pretty good. We’re getting the ball out ahead of the defense. Now we’ve just got to work on finishing at the rim,” observed Paddock.

Athens took its only lead of the game (3-2) on a basket by Mallory Kincaid with 6:11 left in the opening frame, but C-S zoomed out to a double figure lead (13-2) on a basket by Holly Talbert at the 2:44 mark and settled for a 16-9 lead after one quarter.

C-S struggled with its shooting in the second quarter, knocking down just 2-of-16 floor attempts and led by a 25-18 margin at halftime.

Athens went the first 6:02 without a basket in the third quarter and managed just one basket from the floor, leading the way to a 33-20 C-S lead after three quarters.

A three-point basket by Maria Bronsink and basket off a C-S turnover by Kincaid pulled the visitors to within 35-28 with 6:02 left, however C-S closed the quarter strong with a 9-2 run on two baskets by Annabelle Edwards and baskets by Talbert, and Sophie Braithwaite and a free throw by Adalynn Reeves.

Edwards, behind 7-for-14 shooting, led C-S in scoring with 16 points. Talbert had 12 points and Braithwaite pitched in eight points.

Edwards added 16 rebounds, Reeves had nine to go with three assists and two steals and Kendal Reitz claimed six steals.

Missed opportunities fueled by another high turnover total led to a third straight setback to start the season for the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team December 3 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

C-S, which turned the ball over 24 times in the season opener against Kalamazoo Phoenix and 36 times against Galesburg-Augusta, could not slow the trend down in a 61-45 loss to Burr Oak, committing 25 more miscues.

The 0-3 Panthers will attempt to get in the win column December 12 against Calhoun Christian.

While C-S flashed some positive signs with ball movement, locating open teammates inside and a better shooting percentage, the Panthers struggled to enjoy long stretches of positive play due to turnover disruption or missed shots.

The Panthers also struggled at the free throw line, making 7-of-20 attempts.

Both teams made 16 two-point attempts, however Burr Oak made five more three-point baskets.

Both teams got off to slow starts, however a pair of three-point baskets by Burr Oak helped the visitors take a 12-7 lead after one quarter.

C-S only missed one two-point attempt from the floor in the second quarter, but eight turnovers gave the Bobcats eight more shot attempts, and the visitors capitalized, knocking down half (7-14) of their two-point attempts and 2-of-3 attempts from the three-point line to take a 34-21 lead at halftime.

Seven more turnovers in the third quarter prevented C-S from closing the deficit and Burr Oak entered the final frame with a 47-27 lead.

C-S was able to cut the Burr Oak lead to 52-40 with 2:47 left in the game on consecutive baskets by Nyle Sattler and Maddox Wyman off of Bobcat turnovers, but Burr Oak finished strong, scoring the next seven points including a dagger three-point basket by Cole Austin with 1:48 left that gave the visitors a 59-40 lead.

Nyle Sattler’s nine points led C-S in scoring. Maddox Wyman pulled down nine rebounds.

C-S shot a warm 48 percent (16-33) from two-point range but connected on just 2-of-13 three-point chances.

Burr Oak also enjoyed a strong night shooting, making 44 percent (16-36) two-point attempts and were 7-of-17 (41 percent) from the three-point line.

Surrounded by family and friends, and Kellogg Community College volleyball coach Judy Mason, Climax-Scotts High School senior Lylah Parrish had an opportunity December 4 to officially live out something she has had aspirations of doing - extend her volleyball playing experience to the collegiate level.

Parrish signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Kellogg Community College during a ceremony at Climax-Scotts Jr./Sr. High School December 4.

“I’m very grateful. I’m very glad I get to stay close to home. And coach Mason’s a wonderful coach. I’ve known her for a long time. I’m very glad I get to play for her. She’s just an awesome person and an awesome coach. I wouldn’t want to be with any other team,” said Parrish.

Hard work, growth in her game and Parrish’s motivation to get better helped turn her into a very good player, which  got Mason’s attention.

“Her growth and progression through the years that I’ve known her. Watching her from afar, she is a great teammate, a hard worker and she’s a good player. So I’m excited,” said Mason, who just completed her second year as KCC volleyball coach.

Parrish said she is looking forward to being teammates and playing at a higher level against athletes that have excelled in the sport.

“I’m very excited. I feel like doing club (volleyball) it introduced me to playing with the higher level girls, so I think it shouldn’t be too much different from that. So I’m excited to keep the pace of fast pace volleyball and push myself more,” said the C-S senior.
Parrish, who was a starter as a libero the last three years at C-S, worked hard to improve her skills. Her elevated level of play stood out her senior year and especially in the postseason.

C-S coach Angela Gilbert said it wasn’t just Parrish’s leadership skills, but her overall knowledge of the game and ability to read the floor is what stood out in her mind.

“She was able to help all the girls out on the floor and her reading ability, sky high. Year after year, just better and better. This year, just seemed to like quadruple. I’m just so proud of her. She’s done a good job. We’re going to miss her a lot,” Gilbert noted.

The Panther coach said it was impressive, especially late in the season, to watch Parrish read plays and get into a position to bring up many hard hit balls.

“Reading the hitter and anticipating where it’s going to go and being there. Those are all things that are developed year after year, after year. And just the amount of time that she has spent on the court has helped drastically,” explained Gilbert.

The transition from the high school level to community college  can be an adjustment as far as playing time goes, but Mason said she sees Parrish making contributions some where on the floor.

“I do see her to be a contributor to the team next year. And I think that, again, being a good teammate, she’ll work her way into a position, if not the libero,” said Mason.

The KCC coach adds while nothing is set now, she believes Parrish should fit in well at some position, if not as a libero at KCC.

“The collegiate level is different. Once you get into the different play, it is a harder level of play, so I think she will adapt well. And as I’ve seen her in the past through the club that she’s progressed to be able to adapt and become stronger. I think that it’s a position that’s open and whoever’s strongest will be in that position on the court,” said the KCC coach.

Parrish said she plans to major in business with an eye on pursuing a real estate career.
