Both the Galesburg-Augusta Charleston Township and Climax Township Fire Departments responded to a semi tractor trailer fire on Mercury Drive in Charleston Township December 5 where there was on minor injury.
Galesburg-Charleston Township Fire Chief Kevin Roomsberg said when the driver got out of the truck that was on fire, he fell and slightly injured his knee. Life EMS transported the driver to a local hospital.
Roomsberg said the driver is not sure how the fire started. He said when the driver discovered there was a fire in the cab, he put some water on the fire and thought it had been extinguished.
“He (the driver) thought it was out and then all of a sudden, he said the fire just took off through the cab of the truck. It pretty much burned it all up so I have no clue what actually started it,” explained the Galesburg-Charleston Township Fire Chief.
Roomsberg said when the local fire department arrived the cab was fully involved with fire. He said the fire departments were able to contain the fire to the cab, noting the trailer was empty and sustained little damage.
The Galesburg-Charleston Fire Chief said because the fuel tank melted, 60-80 gallons of diesel spilled out. He said Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) was contacted immediately about the diesel fuel spill.
Roomsberg adds for as bad as the weather was late December 4 and the early morning hours December 5, his department did not receive many calls for service.
He said there was a semi tractor trailer accident on I-94 that occurred near the same time the local fire department was called to the semi fire on Mercury Drive so he requested Comstock assist with that call.
Roomsberg adds there were also a handful of calls for service that were cancelled while in route.
