The Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team began the dual portion of the schedule with a close win that came down to the final match and a lopsided victory at C-S High School December 18 on senior-parent night.
On a night when the gym was filled with energy and noise, C-S-M defeated Constantine 36-33 and Schoolcraft 70-12.
The two wins over SAC opponents was a good way to begin conference play.
Two freshmen came through with critical wins in the final two matches to help the co-op team secure the win over Constantine.
C-S-M trailed Constantine by a 33-30 margin heading into the final two matches, however Martin freshman Urijah Joostberns secured an 11-4 decision to send the two teams into the final match tied, 33-33.
In a pressure packed moment, C-S freshman Jaques Porlier was cool and collected throughout the match and earned an 18-11 decision to lift the local co-op team to a victory.
“I knew it was pretty close. I knew I had to just keep fighting, keep my head up and not get down on myself,” said Porlier.
The C-S freshman said despite the pressure packed moment, he relied on his faith and training to help him battle through the match and secure the deciding win.
“I know I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. And my team supporting me, I just went out and gave it everything,” adds Porlier.
C-S coach Mike Reitz liked the compete level he saw from the C-S freshmen.
“Jaques stepped it up tonight. He wrestled pretty good last weekend, had some tough bouts. But went into the practice room with the mindset, we’re there to get better. And that’s what we’re working on every day, is getting better. He showed hard work pays off. Coming in clutch with a big win for the team and sealed up the dual,” said the C-S coach.
C-S-M moved in front 30-10 on a pin by Logan Gilbert (1:15), a major decision by Jayce Ritchie (14-2), pins by Seth Torris (1:04) and Haylen Buell (:18), a win by Gixxon Blair (7-5) and a technical fall
win by Jakub Tomyslak (19-4). However Constantine came back to win the next four matches to take a 33-30 lead, setting up the two critical matches won by Joostberns and Porlier.
A surprise loss by C-S senior Logan Gilbert by a pin in 1:14 to Schoolcraft’s Garrett Randall put C-S-M in a quick 6-0 hole in the second match, but a technical fall win by Jayce Ritchie (15-0) and a pin by Seth Torris (1:04) put C-S-M on top for good, 11-6.
