Big day at Clipper Classic could prove
to be beneficial for C-S-M in post-season
The Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team went 5-0 at the Clipper Classic in Martin December 21, which could prove to be beneficial later in the season if the team can enjoy another trip to the State Finals.
Not only was the local co-op team the only team to go 5-0 at the tournament, but dominant wins over some tough Division 4 schools should give C-S-M better seeding if the team is able to make a run to the Team State Finals for a third straight year.
C-S-M defeated Clinton 46-25, defeated Bronson, the No. 4 seed at last year’s team State Finals, 45-28, defeated Lakeview, district champions the last 4 years, 45-30, defeated Maple Valley 75-3, and defeated Division 2 St. Joseph, 50-26.
“We have a lot of work to do and we can’t look past any teams that we will have to beat to get to Wings Stadium (for the team State Finals). The team needs to focus on getting better every day and staying healthy,” said C-S coach Mike Reitz.
Climax-Scotts High School senior Logan Gilbert (120 and 126-pound weight class), with four pins and a 4-2 decision, Martin sophomore Seth Torris (144 and 150), with one pin, a technical fall (18-0), a 7-5 decision and two major decisions (15-4 and 14-3), Martin junior Haylen Buell (157), with four pins and one technical fall (15-0) and Martin freshman Jacinto Lopez (106), with four pins and a forfeit, all posted 5-0 records.
Gilbert earned his 150th career win and Reitz recorded his 100th career win at the tournament.
Jordan Tutt is the school record holder for career wins at C-S with a record of 188-37.
