JV basketball team wins 6th straight game

Strong Defense and a big second quarter helped the Climax-Scotts boys JV basketball team to a 38-19 win over Battle Creek St. Philip January 10 at Battle Creek St. Phil.

C-S, winners of six straight games, took a 6-2 record into a home game January 15 against Bellevue.

C-S led by a 7-3 count after one quarter but outscored the Tigers 18-2 in the second quarter to take a commanding 25-5 lead into halftime.

The Tigers enjoyed some push back in the third quarter, reducing the deficit to 30-15 entering the fourth quarter, however the home team managed just two free throws and a basket in the final stanza.

Mason Shannon led C-S in scoring with nine points and Aaden Krick added eight.

Walliczek places 1st at indoor track meet

Climax-Scotts High School junior Gabe Walliczek placed first in a shot put competition at an indoor track meet recently.

The Panther junior had a throw of 45’3”, a personal best by nearly 10 feet.

C-S coach David Lodes said the throw qualifies the C-S junior for the indoor state finals held at Central Michigan in March.

Lodes adds Gabe has been working hard in the weight room and throwing many days each week.

Congratulations Gabe.

After securing its first win of the season heading into the Christmas break, the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team faced familiar challenges to start the new calendar year with a 48-36 loss to Battle Creek St. Philip at Battle Creek St. Phil January 10.

The Panthers slip to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the SCAA West Division, while the West Division leading Tigers improve to 4-0 in the division and 7-3 overall.

C-S was hoping to build some momentum, but many of the same frustration the Panthers faced before ending a five-game losing streak, returned in the loss to the Tigers.

Many stretches of play coming up empty because of turnovers, including some that were unforced, and cold shooting, have prevented C-S from enjoying significant runs this season.

The energy and good looks at the basket were there against St. Phil. But finishing has been a challenge for the Panthers for most of the season, whether it be from shots just not falling or an opponent coming up with a nice defensive stop.

C-S boys varsity basketball coach Kenny Sattler feels everything will come together and click for his team eventually because a strong desire to work hard and get better still exists.

“It will happen. Like I said, just because of their work ethic and their attitude and their effort. It’ll happen. It takes a little bit of time. The Lord’s timing is not always our timing,” said the Panther coach.

Outside of the third quarter and parts of the fourth quarter, the Panthers struggled at the offensive end most of the game.

While the Tigers were playing without their leading scorer, Jackson Dzwik because of an injury, the tandem of Lincoln Dzwik, who scored 19 points, and Colt Meyers, who scored 17 points, frustrated C-S often, equaling the Panthers’ offensive output.

C-S trailed the Tigers by a 14-7 count after one quarter, however the Panther offense went cold in the second frame.

A basket by Tye Chambers with 3:12 left in the first half pulled C-S to within 16-9, but the visitors did not score the rest of the quarter. St. Phil also struggled at the offensive end, managing just two baskets from the floor and settled for an 18-9 lead at halftime.

Sattler felt his team came out in the second half at St. Phil with more energy, played strong defense, and was aggressive going to the rim, which led to more free throw opportunities. All 16 of C-S’ free throw attempts occurred in the second half.

“The cool thing is, is our kids never stop fighting. We play until the bitter end. I just think the world of our guys and how they continue to battle. Even if at the end, the score might not go our way. We just continue to fight and battle,” explained Sattler.

A three-point basket by Nyle Sattler at the 3:04 mark of the third quarter pulled C-S to within 27-21, but the Panthers managed just three more points down the stretch and trailed by a 36-24 count after three quarters.

A pair of free throws by Johann Albarran with 3:19 left pulled the Panthers within 41-33, however after a flurry of missed shots and turnovers by both sides, two free throws by St. Phil’s Colt Meyers gave the home team a 43-33 lead with 1:52 left and the Tigers led by double figures the rest of the way.

Nyle Sattler was the lone Panther to reach double figures in scoring for C-S, totaling 11 points.

“Every game is important. Our schedule is just one big game after another. Our kids are learning every day. We’re getting better every day. The successes will come just because of how they practice. They practice so hard and they get after it. At some point, we’ll get on a roll,” adds Sattler.

Girls basketball coach pleased how
team responded to challenges

By Bruce Rolfe

Less then a week after it was revealed Climax-Scotts’ leading scorer and rebounder Annabelle Edwards would likely miss the remainder of the season with a fractured ankle and high ankle sprain and the Panthers suffered a lopsided 47-25 loss to Pittsford, Lady Panther coach Chip Paddock received the positive response he was looking for quickly in a 40-32 C-S win over Battle Creek St. Philip January 10 at the Tiger Den in Battle Creek in a clash between SCAA West Division co-leaders.

C-S improved to 4-0 in the SCAA West Division and 6-2 overall, while St. Phil drops to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in the SCAA West Division.

Paddock was especially impressed with the energy levels he saw at St. Phil.

“We challenged them. In the next day (following the Pittsford loss) our practice was phenomenal. We had a lot of energy. Had some leadership. And you could see, ‘all right girls, we’ve got a big game.’ So they responded really well in practice and I thought they played pretty hard tonight,” said Paddock.

Edwards, a sophomore, was averaging approximately 11 points and nine rebounds a game, leaving a big void at both ends of the floor.

But Paddock said the unfortunate injury can create opportunities for others.

“It’s next man up. We’re trying to figure out our rotations, trying to figure out how to get back after it,” adds Paddock, who said the injury to Edwards is listed as a six to eight week recovery time frame.
C-S never trailed, marching out to an 11-0 lead before St. Phil finally scored its first basket at the 3:18 mark.

The Panthers settled for an 11-5 lead after one quarter.

While St. Phil had some push back in the second frame, the Panthers, behind six points from Holly Talbert and Kendall Reitz, expanded the lead to 25-16 at halftime.

C-S was challenged offensively for most of the second half, taking a 33-27 advantage into the fourth quarter.

A three-point basket by Mylee Grimm with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter pulled the Tigers to 33-30, but the Panther defense did not give up a basket from the floor the rest of the way.

Holly Talbert led C-S with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and four steals, and Kendall Reitz knocked down 11 points to go with four rebounds, two assists and four steals.

Addi Dzwik led St. Phil with 10 points, Mylee Grimm netted eight points and Quinn Dzwik chipped in with seven points.

Undefeated Pittsford Tops Lady Panthers

Based on the SCAA standings and how well the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team was playing entering the Christmas break, a January 8 clash with Pittsford was shaping up to be an intriguing mid-season key match up.

The two teams entered the game in first place in their respective divisions with 3-0 records. Pittsford was 8-0 overall and C-S, with a 5-1 record, entered the contest with a four-game winning streak.

But an injury to sophomore Annabelle Edwards coming out of the Christmas break took away a strong rebounder and inside scoring threat for C-S.

Pittsford’s defense and C-S’ frustration at the offensive end all four quarters led to a lopsided 47-25 win for Pittsford.

Consecutive baskets by Addy Reeves and Kendal Reitz following a free throw by Pittsford to open the game gave C-S a 4-1 lead, but that was the last lead the Panthers would enjoy.

Pittsford closed the quarter with a 16-1 surge to take a 17-5 lead into the second quarter.

A basket by Reeves down low at the 5:53 mark of the second quarter ended a 8:51 scoring drought from the floor for C-S, but the visitors still led 19-7 and held C-S to just two points the rest of the quarter to take a commanding 31-9 lead into halftime.

C-S started the second half strong, scoring the first six points on baskets by Holly Talbert, Sophie Braithwaite and Reitz. However the closest C-S managed to get the rest of the game was within 15 points (31-16) when Kendall Reitz scored a basket, was fouled and completed the three-point play with 5:41 left in the third quarter.

Pittsford finished the quarter on a 9-2 run for a 40-17 lead after three quarters.

While C-S showed energy in the fourth quarter, too many stretches of empty possessions prevented the home team from making a run.

Talbert and Reeves each scored eight points to lead C-S in scoring and Braithwaite had seven rebounds to go with four steals.
