Hackett’s balanced scoring too much
for Rams boys basketball

Teams can often counter a high scoring opponent with various defensive strategies, however when an opponent brings balanced scoring with multiple players doing damage, it becomes a taller task.

The Galesburg-Augusta boys varsity basketball team found that to be the case January 7 when Kalamazoo Hackett had five players reach double figures in scoring in a 70-41 win over the Rams at G-A High School.

The loss sent G-A into a January 14 clash at Parchment with a 5-3 record.

The Irish also enjoyed a potent outside threat, knocking down seven triples, with Leland Berg connecting on four three-point baskets on the way to scoring 14 points.

Both teams struggled to get on track at the offensive end in the first quarter, with Hackett enjoying a 7-5 lead after one quarter.

Hackett expanded the lead to double figures at halftime, 25-15, and slowly pulled away in the third quarter when they outscored the home team 24-14 for a 49-29 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

G-A struggled with its shooting most of the game, making just 30 percent of its floor attempts (15-50) including a 5-for-22 (22 percent) mark from the three-point line.

Jeremiah Mann, who connected on a pair of three-point baskets, was the lone Ram to reach double figures in scoring with 11 points.

Nolan Brewer had five rebounds, Ethan Gibson handed out three assists and C.J. Benard came up with two steals.

G-A’s scheduled game at Gobles January 10 was postponed because of poor weather conditions and a make up date has not been established yet.

The Rams will host Delton-Kellogg tonight on Snowcoming and Hall of Fame night January 17.

At Schoolcraft January 7, the Lady Rams’ win streak ended in a hard fought game with the Eagles claiming a 46-42 win.

Galesburg-Augusta jumped out to a 20-15 lead in the first quarter. Lili Thompson scored 7 points, Rhyann Wilson  5 points and Jaidyn and Jenisyn Klimp each scored a basket for the Rams.

The second quarter saw play slow down considerably as G-A increased its lead to 29-22 at halftime. Jaidyn Klimp connected on a pair of inside baskets and Grace Gibson hit a short jumper and added a pair of free throws to the cause.

Halfway through the third period G-A held a 34-30 lead. The Eagles then turned four Ram turnovers into baskets and outscored G-A 9-2 in the last three minutes to take a 39-36 lead going into the final frame.

Despite losing Jaidyn Klimp to fouls with 5:30 to play, G-A rallied to take back the lead 40-39 with three minutes to play. The Eagles countered with two free throws and a basket by Sydney Drenth giving them back the lead 43-40 with :49 to play.

Jenisyn Klimp scored for G-A narrowing the Eagle lead to 43-42 but another free throw from Drenth and a layup from Val DeVries sealed the Rams fate.

The outside shooting of Addison Sziede (she made 4 three pointers and a total of 16 points) and the inside game of DeVries with 16 points of her own, led the scoring for the Eagles.

G-A’s scoring was spread around with Jaidyn Klimp leading Ram scorers with 10 points. Lili Thompson finished with 9, Grace Gibson with 8, Rhyann Wilson with 7 and Jenisyn Klimp with 5.

G-A, now 5-2, will host Delton-Kellogg January 17 on Hall of Fame Night and Snowcoming at G-A.
