The Zeeland Fire Department recently promoted two firefighters to leadership roles within the department and also swore in a new full-time firefighter.

Ryan Ysseldyke was promoted to the rank of captain, while Hugo Gomez is now a full-time lieutenant with the department. Damon Jones was sworn in as a full-time firefighter. A swearing-in ceremony for the three took place at a recent Zeeland City Council meeting.

Ysseldyke has been a firefighter for 23 years, the last 18 years in Zeeland. He held the rank of acting captain last summer, filling in for a captain who was on leave at the time, Chief Ross Tibbets said.

“He does an amazing job. He’s a good leader,” Tibbets said of Ysseldyke.

Gomez, who went full time last fall, had been with the department on a part-time basis since 2019. He has past experience as a firefighter in the Detroit enclave of Highland Park and also as a public safety officer in Grand Haven.

Jones had been a part-paid firefighter for ZFD since 2019 before being hired on a full-time basis.

ZFD currently has a roster of 28 firefighters, Tibbets said.
