Richard Swiftney, who for years served with distinction as treasurer of The Detroit Legal News Publishing Co., died Jan. 21 at Shelby Crossing Health Campus in Shelby Township. He was 83.
Swiftney was born in Grand Haven on May 18, 1941 to Henry and Katherine Swiftney.
A man of deep faith, Swiftney was heavily involved in the Catholic communities of both St. Edmund Catholic Church in Warren as well as St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Shelby Township.
He took his Catholic faith very seriously having learned the Our Father in Latin as a youth and never forgot it.
Swiftney graduated from Western Michigan University with a bachelor's degree in finance. After graduation, he held various finance positions in the automotive and newspaper industries, including with Chevrolet, Ross Operating Valve, Holley Carburetor, and The Detroit Legal News.
While living in Warren, Rich served as president of the Warren Woods School Board. In his free time, Rich loved spending time bowling, playing basketball, and softball. He was deeply devoted to his family and will be missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include: his beloved wife of 61 years, Barbara; his three children, Michael Swiftney, Steven (Laurie) Swiftney, and Kathryn Swiftney; seven grandchildren, Jessica MacKay, Matthew Swiftney, Carly (Adam) Manders, Devin (Elizabeth) Swiftney, Brenna Swiftney, John Humason, and Joe Humason; his brother, Henry (Polly) Swiftney of Vero Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass was held at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Shelby Township.
Memorial contributions may be directed in his memory to the Kirk Gibson Foundation for Parkinson's Research and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
