C-S can’t maintain momentum,
falls to Delton-Kellogg
By Bruce Rolfe
Coming off a big upset win over SCAA East Division leaders Hillsdale Academy that gave the Climax-Scotts varsity boys basketball team three wins in its last four games, Panther coach Kenny Sattler was hoping the win would be a building block towards a strong finish to the regular season. However the Panthers could not maintain the momentum February 3 in a 62-49 non-league loss to Delton-Kellogg.
C-S, behind nine points from Chase VanMiddlesworth and 47 percent (8-17) overall shooting by the team, got off to a terrific start, moving in front 23-15 after one quarter.
However the offense went cold in the second quarter when C-S was held without a basket in seven floor attempts, turned the ball over six times and managed just three free throws. Delton-Kellogg, behind 69 percent shooting overall (9-13), countered with its biggest offensive quarter to move in front 36-26 at halftime.
C-S, behind a trio of three-point baskets by Nyle Sattler, got back into an offensive groove in the third quarter and trailed Delton-Kellogg 47-42 entering the final stanza.
The Panthers turned the ball over four times in the fourth quarter (C-S finished with 16 for the game) and managed just seven points while Delton-Kellogg enjoyed another strong shooting performance (55.5 percent overall) to hold on for the win.
Dane Sattler finished with 14 points, six rebounds, two steals and five assists, Nyle Sattler scored 13 points and VanMiddlesworth pitched in with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. Maddox Wyman pulled down 10 rebounds.
C-S took a 4-10 record into a February 4 home game against Battle Creek St. Philip.
The Panthers will host Colon February 7 in the Carol Vick Memorial Game.

C-S Claims Big Upset Win Over Hillsdale Academy
Playing without its leading scorer and another player who plays significant minutes against a team ranked 24th in one Michigan poll, the Climax-Scotts boys basketball team put together its best game of the year to surprise Hillsdale Academy 57-56 January 29 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
Hillsdale Academy entered the game 11-3 and SCAA East Division leaders with a 9-0 division record.
Playing without starter and leading scorer Chase VanMiddlesworth (ill) and Johann Albarran (ineligible), C-S coach Kenny Sattler received contributions from other players to make up for the loss of the two players.
Sophomore Maddox Wyman exploded for 18 points, and Nyle Sattler found the range from the three-point line, knocking down five triples to finish with 17 points. Hunter LaSala had a strong game under the boards with 12 rebounds.
“We just played hard. Our kids came together, they had each other’s back, they really played for each other. Every time something happened, they were cheering each other on. There was a lot of energy on the bench. There was a lot of energy on the floor, obviously. A lot of guys stepped up and filled some voids. Just a total team effort. We had guys rebounding, we had guys scoring, we had guys with steals. It was pretty awesome,” said Sattler.
Wyman, behind a 5-for-6 effort from the floor and 10 points, helped C-S to a 14-12 lead after one quarter.
C-S continued its hot shooting from the floor in the second quarter, knocking down 4-of-5 two-point attempts, however Hillsdale Academy paired two, three-point baskets with a 3-for-7 effort from two-point range to tie the game at 24-24 at halftime.
The third quarter proved to be the difference for C-S. While both teams shot over 69 percent from two-point range (C-S was 5-for-7 and Hillsdale Academy was 7-for-10), Nyle Sattler dropped in 4-of-5 three-pointers to help the home team take a 48-41 advantage into the fourth quarter.
While C-S shot a respectable 44 percent (4-9) from two-point range in the fourth quarter, Hillsdale Academy made the ending close by making 5-of-6 free throws in the stanza, only to fall short.
C-S finished the game shooting 62 percent (18-29) from two-point range and 5-for-12 (42 percent) from the three-point stripe for an overall shooting percentage of 56 percent. Hillsdale Academy shot 53 percent (19-36) from two-point range, 16 percent (4-25) from three-point range and 38 percent overall.

C-S-M hoping to enjoy another
deep postseason run
By Bruce Rolfe
The dual portion of the regular season ended for the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team with a 83-0 win over Fennville and 79-0 win over South Haven January 29 at Fennville, leaving the team with an impressive 21-1 record.
Now, the co-op wrestling team looks forward to the postseason both as a team and individually, a time of the year the team has enjoyed a lot of success the last two years.
The team started the postseason impressively, earning a share of the SAC title with a first place finish at the SAC Invite.
A remarkable program ascension that has seen C-S-M advance to the Team State Finals at Wings Stadium the last two years, has elevated the expectation bar.
Last year the co-op wrestling team won conference, district and regional titles that landed the team in the State Finals for a second straight season. The team lost in the quarterfinals to St. Louis 39-26, finishing 26-6 overall.
In 2023, C-S-M finished 29-4 overall, placed second in the conference, and were district and regional champions. The team upset New Lothrop 38-29 in the Division 4 quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champion Hudson 51-12 in the semifinals.
While the coaching staff and players aren’t looking ahead and remain focused on the next match, the goal is to get back to Wings Stadium February 21 and 22 where the team would like to advance to the finals.
The first test for C-S-M was the Team District semifinals February 5 at Martin against Gobles. If the team can win the district championship the co-op team would strive for a birth into the State Finals event for a third straight year at the team regionals February 12 at a site to be determined.
With Malcolm Smith (190 pound weight class) returning after being sidelined a significant part of the season with concussion protocol, C-S-M entered the team districts with a relatively healthy lineup. C-S coach Mike Reitz hopes the team can remain healthy and stay away from sickness.
“The team mind set this year is to see Hudson in the Finals. We have done the best we could have to set up the seeding at Team State. We wrestled everyone we could, trying to get duals with teams that were at Wings last year. At the end of the day, the guys have to show up and wrestle every match. We can’t look past anyone, nor expect any team to send out the same line up as they have before. Everyone wants to knock us off, especially Gobles. One dual at a time, one match at a time,” said Reitz.
“As for the state finals, it is talked about nearly every day and the main goal of the team. The entire team knows what it’s going to take to be back at Wings Stadium on the 21st and 22nd and we are all committed to that goal. We have a very good team this year and are hoping to make a Finals appearance. However we have to take it one match at a time still,” adds C-S senior Jackson Bagwell.
Eleven of the 14 matches C-S-M won in an 83-0 win over Fennville were by forfeits, however the co-op team won 12 head to head bouts in the 79-0 win over South Haven.
Seth Torris (144), with a 17-1 technical fall and a 15-4 major decision, and Sam Bleeker (215) with a pin in 2:49 and a pin in 2:54, both won head to head bouts.

C-S-M wins conference invite;
settles for share of SAC title
By Bruce Rolfe
The Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team started the postseason in a big way by placing first at the SAC Conference Tournament February 1 at Coloma.
C-S-M settles for a share of the conference title with Allegan after losing an earlier head to head bout to the Tigers. C-S-M was SAC Conference champions last year.
C-S-M finished with 215 points at the tournament, three points ahead of second place finishing Allegan (212) in the 12-team invite.
The local co-op wrestling team also had 12 wrestlers place.
C-S senior Logan Gilbert (120-pound weight class), was conference champion for a fourth straight year. He was one of three C-S-M wrestlers who placed first, joining Cole Reitz (132) and Haylen Buell (144).
Other placers for C-S-M included Jackson Bagwell (165), and Malcolm Smith (190), with second place finishes, Seth Torris (150), Sam Bleeker (215) and Cooper Dinse (285), with third place finishes, and Jocinto Lopez 106), Jayce Ritchie (138), Gixxer Blair (157), and Jakob Tomyslak (175), with fourth place finishes.
Gilbert, who improved to 31-5 for the season, moved closer to the school record for career wins, entering the Team Districts February 5 with 176 career wins. Jordan Tutt is the school record holder for career wins at C-S with a record of 188-37.
C-S senior Sam Bleeker registered the most pins in the tournament with four and C-S-M finished with 23 pins at the tournament, two behind Allegan for the most pins by a team.

Two wrestlers have reached
150 career wins this season
By Bruce Rolfe
Climax-Scotts now has two wrestlers who captured their 150th career wins this season.
Climax-Scotts High School senior Jackson Bagwell joined teammate senior Logan Gilbert as members of the 150 career win club January 22 at Coloma.
Gilbert captured his 150th career win December 21 at the Clipper Classic in Martin.
Bagwell remembers when he was a freshman, he carefully studied the career wins leader board, hoping he might reach 100 career wins, a milestone recognized in wrestling as a significant achievement.
As the C-S senior enjoyed success on the mat, his career win total swelled and he secured his 100th career win last year.
That put him in a position to reach 150 career wins his senior year.
“As I got closer to 100, I realized that 150 or even the school record (188) was possible and I focused on that,” said Bagwell.
Bagwell reached the 150 career win mark at Coloma January 22, however the achievement wasn’t celebrated until a SAC double dual January 29 at Fennville when he won two more matches by a forfeit and another by a pin in 1:53 to bump his career total to 156 entering the SAC Conference Tournament February 1 at Coloma.
“Reaching 150 was such a great feeling and felt very rewarding for all the hard work that has gone into it,” said the Panther senior.
Like Bagwell, Gilbert was very excited to reach the prestigious 150-win mark.
“It’s pretty cool to be honest. Not a lot of people can say they got 100 wins in their high school career, let alone 150. I’m just extremely grateful that I was able to reach it and to be able to add on to it,” said Gilbert.
Gilbert said reaching 150 career wins never entered his mind when he was a freshman but once he reached 100 career wins early in his junior season, he thought 150 career wins was within reach.
Gilbert is now pursuing the school record for career wins. He entered the Team Districts February 5 with176 career wins. Jordan Tutt is the school record holder for career wins at C-S with a record of 188-37.
Reaching the school record for career wins is certainly within reach, but could depend on how far C-S-M advances in the team tournaments, as well as how far the C-S senior moves through the individual tournaments. But he embraces the challenge and opportunity.
“Reaching the school record has always been a goal of mine. And now knowing that I am only a couple wins away from that mark, it feels pretty amazing to say the least. But I just got to go out there and wrestle one match at a time,” said the C-S senior.
