G-A’s winning streak reaches 9 games


The Galesburg-Augusta boys varsity basketball team extended its winning streak to nine games with a 65-58 win over Allegan February 10 at G-A High School in a makeup game.

The win sends the Rams into a huge SAC Valley Division first place battle against Gobles (10-8 and 6-2) February 14 with a 14-4 overall record (7-1 in the SAC Valley Division). G-A won an earlier game against Gobles, 64-56.

G-A, behind six points from Jeremiah Mann, took a 17-16 lead after one quarter.

Mann dropped in six more points in the second frame, helping G-A to a 35-27 advantage at halftime.

Allegan was able to reduce the Ram lead to six points (50-44) after three quarters.

G-A was accurate on 39 percent (24-61) of its floor shots overall, including 50 percent (4-8) from the three-point line.

Mann. who was 8-for-14 from the floor overall, led G-A in scoring with 19 points to go with 12 rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Giovonni Evans had 14 points and four steals and C.J. Benard, who was 5-for-10 overall from the floor, added 13 points.

Big Start Helps G-A to Win Over Martin


A big start helped the Galesburg-Augusta boys varsity basketball team to a 74-32 win over Martin on the road February 7.

G-A, behind nine points from Jeremiah Mann, seven points from Ethan Thomas and six points from Giovonni Evans, raced out to a 30-6 lead after one quarter.

The Rams continued to play strong defense in the second quarter, outscoring the home team 14-5 to increase the lead to 44-11 at halftime.

G-A, behind eight points by Anakin Jordan, led by a 62-23 count after three quarters.

Mann had 15 points to lead G-A in scoring and Aidan Moses and Anakin Jordan each scored 10 points.

G-A made 41 percent (26-63) of its floor shots overall and including a 4-for-14 (28 percent) effort from the three-point line.

G-A Boys Basketball Team Downs Springport


The Galesburg-Augusta boys varsity basketball team earned a hard fought 51-44 win over Springport February 5 at Springport.

The game was tight most of the way, however G-A, behind a pair of three-point baskets and a free throw from Ethan Gibson and six points each from Ethan Thomas and Giovonni Evans in the fourth quarter, overcame a three-point deficit to start the final stanza.

G-A led by a 12-11 count after one quarter, 21-20 at halftime and trailed by a 32-29 margin after three quarters.

Gibson finished with 12 points and added five steals, and Evans scored 10 points. Jeremiah Mann and Ethan Thomas each chipped in with nine points.

G-A shot 38 percent overall (21-54) from the floor including a 5-for-17 mark (29 percent) from the three-point line.

Strong Defense Lifts Rams Over Zion Christian


The Rams held visiting Zion Christian to 10 points or less in each quarter to post a 53-26 non-league win February 4.

G-A enjoyed quarter leads of 12-7, 27-10 and 45-16.

G-A shot 36 percent (20-55) overall from the floor including 5-23 (21 percent) from the three-point line.

Three Rams reached double figure scoring, with Giovonni Evans leading the Rams with 11 points. Jeremiah Mann and Ethan Gibson each added 10 points, while Ethan Thomas and C.J. Benard each added nine points.

JV boys basketball team moves to 14-2


The Galesburg-Augusta boys JV basketball game improved to 14-2 with a 63-36 win over Allegan February 10 at G-A High School.

Patrick Armock scored 20 points to go with 13 rebounds, and 8 block and Hunter Pritchard added 14 points.

G-A Gets Back in Win Column


After suffering its first loss of the season followed by another setback, the Galesburg-Augusta JV boys basketball team got back in the win column February 6 with a 79-7 win over Martin at G-A High School.
Jerome Bailey had 15 points and Hunter Pritchard added 14 points for the Rams.

G-A’s 11-game winning streak to start the season came to an end with a 43-36 setback to Zion Christian February 4 at G-A High School.

Cayden Allie had 14 points for G-A and Hunter Pritchard added 12 points.

The Rams dropped a 47-30 decision the following day at Springport. No scoring leaders were available.

G-A earned a 53-29 win over Holland Black River January 29 at G-A High School.

Hunter Pritchard led the Rams in scoring with 12 points and Patrick Armock contributed 11 points.

The Rams began the stretch of five games in 10 days with a 49-26 win over Lawton January 28 at G-A High School.

Hunter Pritchard scored 11 points in the win.

No G-A boys qualify for individual regionals


Eight members of the Galesburg-Augusta boys wrestling team participated in the Division 4 Individual Districts at Bellevue February 8, and none of the grapplers finished in the top four in their weight class to qualify for the Individual Regionals.

Kameron Prince (285-pound weight class), Colton Robertson (132) and Jaxsen Ray (144) were all 2-2, and Owen Cowles (113) and Lincoln Hawes (120) were both 1-2. Ayden Maine (175), Tyler Evans (106), and Hunter Kendall (126) also participated in the tournament but did not win a match.

Mendon ends G-A wrestling teams’
season in district championship match


The team portion of the season ended for the Galesburg-Augusta wrestling team February 5 with a 48-30 loss to Mendon in the team district championship match at Mendon High School.
Both schools advanced to the district championship round after the other two schools opted out of the tournament.

Lincoln Hawes (120-pound weight class), with a pin in 1:39, Jaxsen Ray (144), with a pin in 33 seconds, and Kameron Prince (285), with a pin in 53 seconds, won head to head bouts, while Owen Cowles (113) and Aaron Wiliks-Millard (132), both won by forfeits.

G-A’s Alexis Thomas qualifies for
individual wrestling regionals


Galesburg-Augusta High School junior Alexis Thomas qualified for the Division 4 Girls Wrestling Individual Regional tournament with a third place finish at the Individual District Tournament at Dowagiac February 9.

The top four placers in each weight class at the individual districts advanced to the individual regionals.

Thomas will take a 6-8 record into the individual regionals February 16 at Portage Northern after posting a 3-1 record at the individual district tournament.

The top four finishers in each weight class at the individual regional tournament qualify for the Individual State Finals February 28 - March 1 at Ford Field.

Thomas, wrestling in the 145-pound weight class, won her first match by a pin in 2:58 after an opening round bye. She then lost by a pin in the semifinals in 1:10, bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a pin in 3:27 before winning the third place match by a pin in 2:12.

Pennfield first loss; moves to 10-3


The Galesburg-Augusta JV girls basketball team improved to 10-3 with a 38-11 win over Martin February 6 at G-A High School.

Lexi Coburn scored eight points for the winners, Claire Callender and Kayla Bortolussi each scored seven points and Aaralyn Gain added six points.

G-A coach Dontrell Bowden said his team played good team basketball in the win.

The Rams weren’t as sharp the previous night in a 33-26 loss to Michigan Lutheran.

The Rams earned a 34-31 win over Pennfield February 3 at Pennfield.

Pennfield entered the game undefeated.

Emily Coleman scored 10 points and Lexi Coburn and Kayla Bortolussi each added eight points.

G-A coach Dontrell Bowden said his team played hard and battled to the finish.

Rams suffer setback at Martin

Galesburg-Augusta’s girls varsity basketball team lost a divisional game at Martin on Friday, February 7th 52-44.

A 7-0 run in the first quarter gave the Rams a 12-4 lead but the Clippers returned the favor with their own 7-0 run to finish the period trailing G-A 12-11.

The second quarter featured  back and forth scoring with the difference being Martin made seven baskets, four of them from three point range. The results were a Clipper lead of 31-27 at the half. G-A’s Jaidyn Klimp sat most of the second quarter on the bench with foul trouble. Grace Gibson picked up the slack scoring nine of her game high 19 points to keep the game close. G-A was almost perfect from the free throw line in the first half  making 8 of 10 attempts.

The third quarter was a low scoring affair with Martin holding a slight edge outscoring the Rams 8-6 giving the home team a six point advantage, 39-33, going into the final period. Midway through the third Klimp was called for her fifth foul putting the Rams at a disadvantage.

The fourth quarter was a mirror of the third as the teams took turns exchanging baskets. The Rams had their chances to close the gap but after their first half success at the foul line they managed to make just 3 of 12 in the second half.

Hailee Themins, Ellesa Callender and Jaidyn Klimp each scored 6 points to go with Gibson’s 19 for G-A.

Klimp entered the February 11 game against Allegan with 1098 career points.

The Rams (10-6, 5-3) have two more divisional games, one with Gobles (February 14) and one with Delton-Kellogg (February 21). They will need wins in both games to ensure a second place finish in the division. G-A will host Climax-Scotts February 17.

Lady Rams Top Titans for Tenth Win

On February 5th Galesburg-Augusta’s Lady Ram basketball team improved its record to 10-5 with a 54-38 win at Michigan Lutheran.

The host Titans held a 9-4 lead midway through the first quarter before the Rams went on a 13-2 run giving them a 17-11 lead going into the second period. Jenisyn Klimp made three baskets in the paint, Hailee Themins pumped in a pair of midrange jumpers to go with a three pointer by Rhyann Wilson for the Rams.

G-A expanded its lead to 28-17 in the second quarter. Jenisyn Klimp added two more baskets to her total and finished the night with a season best 12 points. Her sister Jaidyn, along with Wilson and Lili Thompson  each scored for the Rams as well in the quarter.

The Rams continued their dominance in the paint in the second half. Eighteen of their twenty-two baskets for the game came from the inside. Jaidyn Klimp scored 12 of her game high 16 points in the second half. Grace Gibson made a three pointer, a short jumper and two free throws and Ellesa Callender scored a pair of put back baskets to add to the Ram total.

G-A had a balanced attack with Jaidyn Klimp leading the way with 16 points. Her sister Jenisyn scored 12, Gibson and Callender 7 each and Wilson added 6.

Jaidyn Klimp also had 9 rebounds, 8 steals and 5 assists on the night. Callender picked up 5 rebounds and 5 steals while Jenisyn Klimp pulled down 5 rebounds and had 4 steals.

Pennfield Tops Lady Rams 48-38

Three point shooting was the name of the game in G-A’s 48-38 loss to Pennfield February 3 on the road.

The host Panthers made six baskets in the first quarter, four of them from beyond the arc, and led the Rams 16-14 after one period of play. Grace Gibson and Hailee Themins each made a three pointer for G-A and Jaidyn Klimp scored twice inside to keep it close.

Pennfield (6-9) made just three baskets in the second quarter but they were all threes. Gibson, Klimp and Ellesa Callender each scored inside and at halftime the Rams trailed 25-21.

The Panthers hit their eighth and final three pointer to open the second half and went on a 9-0 run late in the quarter to build a 42-30 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Both teams went into a scoring slump to begin the fourth quarter. With four minutes left to play the Rams went on an 8-0 run, narrowing the deficit to 42-38.

The G-A defense forced a couple of Panther turnovers but couldn’t cash in on them.

In the final minute Pennfield hit a pair of free throws and a couple of layups to seal the win.

Jaidyn Klimp led G-A  with 18 points. She had 14 rebounds and 4 steals. Grace Gibson scored 9 points and chipped in with 5 rebounds.
