C-S will be attempting to snap 4-game
losing skid in Winterfest Game
Gobles took advantage of a double figure rebounding advantage and a high number of turnovers committed by the Climax-Scotts varsity basketball team in a non-league 54-44 victory over the Panthers February 10 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
The loss drops C-S’ overall record to 4-13 entering the February 14 Winterfest game at C-S against Bellevue. Gobles takes a 10-8 overall record and 6-2 mark in the SAC Central Division, into a huge SAC Central Division game at Galesburg-Augusta (14-4 and 7-1) February 14 in a battle for first place.
Gobles scored a handful of baskets inside after grabbing many second and third opportunities under the offensive glass where the Tigers held a 14-9 advantage. Overall, Gobles held a 33-21 advantage under the boards.
The Tigers also turned 15 C-S turnovers into 17 points.
Gobles also found gaps in the Panther defense often to score multiple baskets inside on drives to the basket.

Tigers Stun Panthers in Double Overtime Win
After playing from behind most of the fourth quarter, the Climax-Scotts boys basketball team battled back to force overtime only to drop a 71-67 decision in double overtime to Battle Creek St. Phil February 3 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
St. Phil meshed 11-of-16 free throws in the two overtime sessions, including five-of-six over the final 1:06 in the second overtime.
A three-point basket by Nyle Sattler with 1:57 left in the second overtime gave C-S its only lead of the second extra session, 67-66.

After ending regulation tied 54-54, the two teams battled through a close first overtime.
C-S held a 63-62 lead with 4.4 seconds left, however a foul sent St. Phil’s Colt Myers to the free throw line and a chance to win the game. But St. Phil’s only free throw miss of the first overtime came on the Tiger senior’s first attempt before he made the second shot to send the game into a second overtime.
The Tigers made seven-of-eight free throws in the first overtime.

Lady Panthers showing strong qualities
with two recent wins
By Bruce Rolfe
With Burr Oak still close behind in the SCAA West Division standings, the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team maintained a game and a half lead by registering a 52-35 win over Colon Friday in the 8th Carol Vick Memorial Game at C-S.
The Carol Vick Memorial game is named after former C-S girls varsity basketball coach and current C-S High School teacher Josh Vick’s mother, who was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer in 1995 when Josh was 15 years old. She died six years later after she was told she would live six months.
C-S improves to 12-3 overall and 9-1 in the SCAA West Division while Colon drops to 4-10 and 1-7.
Lady Panther coach Chip Paddock was impressed how his team showed good composure after Colon reduced a 26-14 Panther lead at halftime to three points with 3:39 left in the third quarter.
C-S ended the quarter strong with a 10-4 run for a 40-31 lead entering the final quarter.
C-S played strong defense in the fourth quarter, allowing just two free throws by Allison Vinson and a basket by Raegan Thaxton.
“We did a good job executing late. Probably not our best shooting night. But extremely proud of the girls staying within themselves. Seem to be a little battle tested tonight. Obviously, tip your cap to Colon.
They came out with a pretty good game plan. Were able to maintain, and put some things together when we needed to down at the end stretch and I thought we did a good job of closing it,” offered the Lady Panther coach.
Paddock has also been impressed how his team has responded to losses. C-S has avoided any losing streaks by answering each of the three losses this year with a win.
“The biggest thing for me is they’re owning things. Whether it’s, watching film, owning rotations, owning just the basics, the fundamentals. Extra reps at practice. They’re doing a really good job of being able to watch, learn, process our mistakes, and then make the appropriate adjustments.
While C-S only held a four-point lead (12-8) after one quarter, the Lady Panthers turned up the defense in the second quarter, forcing 10 turnovers that led to 10 points, helping the Panthers to a 26-14 lead at halftime.
Holly Talbert continued her hot streak, pouring in 26 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the floor. She added six rebounds, two assists and six steals. Talbert entered the February 11 game at Hillsdale Academy averaging 24 points a game over the last three games. Sophie Braithwaite, who knocked down a pair of three-point baskets, added 12 points and Addy Reeves contributed nine points and seven rebounds.

C-S-M overcomes challenges to claim
4th team district championship
With a goal of advancing to the Team State Finals, the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team faced an unexpected challenge in the Team District semifinals February 5 at Martin, but the co-op team pulled together to capture a fourth straight team district championship.
With regulars Logan Gilbert and Cole Reitz wrestling sick and Gixxer Blair remaining home because of sickness, C-S-M gutted out a 34-26 win over Gobles in the semifinals and then defeated Delton-Kellogg in the championship match 54-28.
Delton-Kellogg defeated Bloomingdale 72-12 in the other semifinal match.
The win sent C-S-M into the Team Regionals February 12 against Lawton at Decatur. White Pigeon and Decatur wrestled in the other Team Regional semifinal.
“The guys showed up today. Everybody wrestled well. We’ve got several guys out sick, Guys barely getting done with a match and then going and finding a trash can. We’re one step closer. We’ve got two more tough teams we’re going to have to battle next Wednesday night (Team Regionals), before we reach a portion of our goal. Everybody came out and performed. The team wrestled for each other. It’s fantastic that our two communities can come together. These two schools come together and join to make one tough group of wrestlers,” said C-S coach Mike Reitz.
There were some swing matches that could have gone either way C-S-M won that gave the team a big lift, leaving Reitz impressed.
Sophomore Cooper Dinse (275-pound weight class) won by a pin that gave the co-op team a 21-13 lead.
Junior Nate Arnett (120) trailed 4-1 but emerged with a 6-4 win, giving C-S-M a 28-16 lead.
Gilbert, who was slow to return to the middle of the mat two times because of sickness and was issued delay warnings, battled through his illness and earned a big 8-4 win for a 31-16 lead with three more matches remaining.
Reitz overcame sickness as well, earning a 9-3 win that clinched the win.
“Cooper got in a bad position a couple of times. Kept fighting and ended up getting the pin. That’s a big six points we weren’t expecting to get. Nate Arnett, a junior, first year wrestler. He’s really come on and his hard work is paying off. Obviously, what we’ve seen tonight, my mind’s blown. Nate, I wish we would have had him his whole high school career, but that’s not the case. He’s just working hard to get better every day and it’s showing, (Logan) Gilbert, sicker then a dog. Yesterday didn’t come to practice. Barely made it to school today. Got through his match. Got hit with some stall warnings, trying to get back to the center (of the mat). Not feeling real well but still got it done. Ended up getting a victory. I’m proud of these guys. I’m proud of how tough they are. I’m proud of what they do for each other, and how they represent this Climax-Scotts-Martin team,” said Reitz.
“It was pretty hard, but knowing that I had the whole team behind me made it a lot easier. I wasn’t just wrestling for myself but for the entire team, our community, and two schools. It made it a lot easier to go out there and battle for it,” said Gilbert of wrestling ill.
Because Reitz and Gilbert wrestled sick in the semifinals match, the coaching staff kept the two seniors out of the lineup for the championship match. Some younger wrestlers on the team received an opportunity to wrestle in a big stage event, that Reitz labeled as “huge” for the growth of the program.
“A lot of times these young guys, especially now, they’re stuck behind a group of seniors that have been hammering since they were freshmen. They were really dedicated to the sport as young men and they come into high school and have success. It’s hard for guys to break the line up. When we’ve got the lineup that we have, 11 ranked wrestlers, it’s hard for an under classman to break the lineup. We’ve done our best the last two years to get them as many JV matches as we can and exhibition matches on Wednesdays. They step up and do their job. They’re getting better. Some of the guys haven’t competed much and still get a little anxious out there, you can definitely see it. But I know with their efforts in the practice room, how they drill, what they’re capable of, once they get some more mat time and competition experience, they’re going to be hammers too,” said coach Reitz.
“It’s all about hard work. Those guys believe in what we’re teaching.them. They believe in themselves and they go out and they battle. They’re ready to go to war for six minutes. And it showed tonight,” adds Reitz.
