G-A sweeps Battle Creek Central
in March 28 opener
The Galesburg-Augusta varsity baseball team opened the new season with a pair of non-league wins over Battle Creek Central March 28 at G-A High School.
Jaden Fawcett and Ashton Matrau combined on a two-hitter in the first game in a 19-4 three-inning win and Alex Krugh dominated on the mound in a 10-1 win in the second game.
Battle Creek struck for three first inning runs for a quick 3-0 lead in the first game, however the Rams responded with a 13-run second inning.
Fawcett pitched the first two innings, allowing both hits and three earned runs to go with one walk and three strikeouts for the win.
Matrau pitched a scoreless third inning. He gave up one unearned run and struck out two.
Matrau added three hits including a double and two RBI at the plate.
Krugh was dominant in four innings of work in the second game, yielding just one hit, He struck out 11 of the 16 Bearcats he faced and walked two.
Krugh also had a big day at the plate, driving in four runs on two hits including a double. Matrau drove in three runs including a double with two hits.

Eight GAWC wrestlers place at state finals
Eight members of the Galesburg-Augusta Wrestling Club placed at the MYWAY State Finals.
Grayson Kerby (2012 birth year) and Harper Shoup (2011), were both state champions in the boys heavyweight class and Bentley Cody (2013) was state champion in the boys 119-pound weight class.
Harper Mahoney (2014-2015) was state champion in the girls heavyweight class.
Also placing was Harper Mahoney (2014), with a third place finish in the boys heavyweight class, Hunter Sparks (2017), with a fourth place finish in the boys heavyweight class, Carson Dunithan (2018-2020) with a fifth place finish in the boys 67-pound weight class, Kaylynn Walden (2014-2015), with a second place finish in the girls heavyweight class, and Ava Swarmes (2018-2020), with a fifth place finish in the 43-pound weight class.
There were over 4,300 wrestlers competing at the four-day event.
The wrestlers qualify for the NUWAY Nationals April 11-13 in Grand Rapids. GAWC coach Josh Houseman said most of the State placers will wrestle at the event. He adds there will also be individual matches and girls competition at the NUWAY event.
Houseman said a number of the GAWC wrestlers were recruited by dual teams from other clubs to fill in open weight classes.
