From the April 10, 2015 Climax CrescentTree Goes Down but Scotts Store Owner Finds Use for Stump
There was some sadness in the town of Scotts recently when an old landmark tree that had died in front of the Scotts Country Store had to be cut down, but the remaining six-foot stump from the Chinese Elm will still serve a purpose.
Instead of having the large stump removed, Scotts Country Store owner Robert Beardsley developed the idea of putting the remaining timber to good use, so he had the stump converted into a large, wooden chair.
Hometown Recognizes Dallas Froberg
for Scoring Accomplishment
The saying, a small town looks out for its own, once again held true this week when the Pride of Scotts placed a message on its electronic marquee congratulating Climax-Scotts junior and Scotts resident Dallas Froberg for scoring the most points among all Class A-D players during the 2014-2015 regular basketball season.
The high scoring C-S junior finished the regular season with 537 points, 21 points ahead of Class C Millington.
Senator O’Brien Recognizes Climax Crescent Owners
for 25 Years of Service To Community
State Senator Margaret O’Brien (20th District) recognized Climax Crescent owners Bruce and Crystal Rolfe for their 25 years as owners of the local newspaper with a Special Tribute presentation at Tuesday’s regular Village Council meeting.
The State Tribute, signed by O’Brien, State Representative David Maturen (63rd District), and Governor Rick Snyder, notes the Rolfes operate the only existing weekly newspaper in Kalamazoo County, and have produced over 1,300 editions of the Crescent. The framed tribute adds, “their commitment to one another and to the community has had a long lasting positive impact for the people in Climax.”
The Climax Crescent was started in 1912 by Herb Smith and he later operated the business with his wife Mary. The couple’s son and daughter in law, the late Ray and Kate Smith, purchased and operated the business until 1990 when the Rolfes purchased the business.
Parents Want Answers Why Volleyball Coach
Was Suspended; Attorney Wants Hearing
It’s been nearly six weeks since Climax-Scotts varsity volleyball coach Tim Bannister was suspended from his coaching position and he still hasn’t been offered a public hearing to review the reasons and the public has not been told why the coach has been suspended by the school district.
For the second straight month, a handful of parents left a C-S Board of Education meeting last Monday still wondering after the board and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Geoffrey Balkam said they could not comment on the matter when parents again asked why the coach was suspended along with what the school board policies surrounding suspensions of employees and coaches are.
Wade Earns First Save; Impressive in Three Outings
Travis Wade, the son of Jim and Lou Wade of Climax and graduate of Climax-Scotts High School, began the new season impressively with the Kissimmee Cobras, the Houston Astros’ Class A Affiliate of the Florida State League.
Wade garnered his first save of the season April 11 in the Cobras’ 3-1 win over Charlotte. The hard throwing righthander retired all three batters he faced in the ninth inning, striking out one.
Wade finished the Cobras’ 8-3 win over Charlotte April 8, tossing a scoreless nine inning. He faced three batters, striking two of them out.
Wade has a clean slate in the first three games, facing 14 batters in four innings worked and has given up just two hits while striking out five.

From The April 11, 1975 Climax CrescentROTARY CLUB
This week Bob Gregersen of the Kalamazoo County Parks and Recreation Department presented a very interesting program when he told us about the plans and progress of restoration of the Scotts Mill to the way it was back in the 1870’s. The 108 acre site, including the old mill has been acquired as a County Park. It is hoped the mill will be completed and open to the public in the spring of 1976.

From The April 14, 1950 Climax CrescentGUESTS OF SCOTTS DEPT.
The Pavilion Township Fire Department at Scotts held a volunteer fireman’s meeting Wednesday evening and entertained guests from the Long Lake and Climax Township Units.
In all, about 25 members attended. The Scotts Department held a short pumping drill with their equipment and then the group assembled at the Scotts school where three very interesting motion pictures were shown. Fire Chief Rovelle White conducted a very enjoyable meeting.
The group then went to the basement and were treated to some good hot coffee and delicious home made cup cakes by Chief Cooks - Glenn Harbeck and Principal Walter Smith.
The Scotts and Long Lake Fire Units were invited to be guests at a joint meeting to be held in Climax during the month of May.
