Logan Gilbert, Cole Reitz sign letters of intent with SMC
By Bruce Rolfe
Climax-Scotts High School seniors Cole Reitz and Logan Gilbert have enjoyed plenty of success on the wrestling mat during their four years at C-S.
The two C-S seniors will be looking to capture more success at the collegiate level at Southwestern Michigan College after the two signed letters of intent to attend and wrestle at the community college April 14 in front of family, friends and coaches at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
Gilbert said one reason why SMC was appealing for him is he knows some students attending the college and many of his wrestling friends also attend the junior college.
“It’s going to be a comfortable spot for me. It’s going to be a fun year. If college isn’t for me, it’s only two years. Knowing that Cole’s going there with me is going to make it a lot easier and a lot more fun. Excited,” said Gilbert, who said he’s not certain what field he wants to go into yet, but plans to major in Sports Management.
Cole said the smaller campus at Southwestern Michigan College reminded him of C-S and felt like a good fit.
“The coaching staff is phenomenal. I have lots of teammates or co-workers that have gone there in the past. Overall, just the right choice for me. I know people that go there. It’s really a comfortable place that I see for myself,” said Cole.
Both C-S seniors experienced a ton of success individually and as members of the Climax-Scotts-Martin Co-op wrestling team that advanced to the Division 4 Team State Finals the last three years including this season when the team lost in the state finals championship match. They both admit they’re anxious to compete against tough competition regularly at a higher level.
“I’m excited to see how I can do against those guys. Especially wrestling year around, not just from December to March. Being able to focus on all 12 months on one sport. I’d like to see where that will take me and how much better I can be,” said Gilbert.
“I definitely think it’s going to elevate my wrestling to the next level. The teammates and the hard work put in year around is definitely going to elevate my wrestling skills, but the competition is going to be much harder. There’s guys that have been doing this two, three years and they’re fully grown men, 21, 22, 23. It’s definitely going to be a hard level of competition but I’m excited to see where hard work takes me,” adds Cole, who said he will be majoring in Business Management.
SMC wrestling coach Todd Hesson said he knows both Cole and Logan’s parents through the MyWay wrestling program, however his assistant coach Austin Franco works out regularly with the wrestlers and noticed an uptick in their skills. He encouraged them to consider SMC and felt the junior college might be a good fit for the two Panthers.
While the two Panthers will bring lots of promise and previous success, Hesson said SMC sports a solid lineup with seven of 10 wrestlers, including two All-Americans who helped SMC win the district and qualify for the Nationals last year, returning.
“We wrestle a lot of opens. In high school you double enter. We can enter as many as we want into an open. So sometimes they’ll wrestle teammates and there tends to be a pecking order that gets established over the long haul. But you also have to have a resume’. They’ll have an opportunity and then next year we graduate a bunch so they’re really going to have an opportunity,” said Hesson who projects there will be 45 wrestlers going out for the sport next fall.
Hesson said the wrestling program restarted three years ago and there’s plenty of momentum in the sport at SMC. He said the college is building a new $5 million facility with four wrestling mats.
He projects Logan to wrestle at the 125-pound weight class and Cole at 133 pounds.
C-S wrestling coach Mike Reitz said he’s glad his son and Logan made the decision to continue wrestling and looks forward to seeing how much the two seniors develop once they get into an intense training environment.
“For a couple of guys that have never dedicated year around training to the sport, I’m excited to see them advance at the next level to where their training is focused upon this sport and this sport only year around. Being dedicated to the weight room.
Very excited to see these guys compete at the next level,” said Reitz, who announced after the wrestling season he was stepping down as head coach at C-S.
The Panther wrestling coach said both wrestlers never talked much about continuing their wrestling in college until recently. He said Cole started thinking about wrestling after high school at the end of his junior year and Logan started having the conversation this year.
“I’m excited to see the outcome where 100 percent focus will be on this sport. Watching them grow as individuals, human beings and watching them become successful members of society,” adds Reitz.
Both wrestlers also look forward to having Martin teammate Jace Ritchie commit to Southwestern Michigan College.
Gilbert became the career wins leader at C-S this year, finishing with a 191-21 career record. Gilbert is a four time conference champion, four time district champion, four time regional champion and a four time state finals qualifier including two times he was state champion, a runner up finisher and a third place medal winner this year.
Cole finished the year 34-15. He is a two time conference champion, two time district placer, two time regional placer, a two time state finals qualifier and he earned an all state medal one year.
Both wrestlers enjoyed their time at C-S where many memories were created.
“I’m glad I went here. I’m glad this is where I spent my 12 years. I’m just so grateful that I can call Climax-Scotts home. It’s amazing. The community, friends, teachers. Pretty much everyone,” said Gilbert.
“I wouldn’t trade my time at C-S for anything else. It’s been amazing,” adds Reitz.
