The Lawrence Memorial District Library Board continues to review the next phase of renovations that will be considered at the library.
Library Board President Jamie Camp presented a preliminary sketch idea for renovations in the children’s room for the board to review at the April 22 board meeting.
One plan Camp reviewed involves moving a double sided bookcase towards the current children’s area. The young adult area could then be moved slightly, allowing the juvenile area to flow into a corner area. The front part of the room would be the children’s area.
Camp said there are other options that can be considered for seating and location of bookcases in the room. “It’s just trying to figure out how to make everything fit and work,” said Camp.
Moving the Juvenile non-fiction section into the first section of the non-fiction room was also discussed.
The board will consider moving the adult large print section that is currently blocking a second doorway, to a back wall near the restroom.
The Library Board plans to replace patron chairs currently in front of the window at the library.
Worn carpet in the children’s room, which is located in the original section of the former post office building, will be removed. Refinishing the original hardwood floors will be considered. However if refinishing the original wood floors is cost prohibitive and will cause a long delay opening the room for patrons, replacing the flooring with
matching carpet squares used in the fiction room and Prairie Historical Society room will be considered.
Some book shelves may need to be purchased as part of the renovation project.
The Library Board completed the first of three phases of improvements at the local library last year, installing new carpeting in the adult fiction and media room and in the Prairie Historical Society Room, installing approximately 28 new shelving units that contain 2851 titles in the adult fiction and media room, new paint on the walls and new LED lights in the adult fiction and media room.
The third renovation phase planned is an upgrade in the adult non-fiction room.
Library Usage Continues to Grow
Lawrence Memorial District Library Director Bill Lewis said the local library continues to see strong usage numbers.
For the month of March there were 168 Overdrive checkouts with 84 being audio book checkouts, 54 magazine checkouts and 30 books checked out.
There were 190 checkouts and 212 returns for a total of 412 units that were moved in March and a combined total of 570.
Lewis said the library was open a total of 104 hours in March, noting the library was closed March 31 due to a power outage.
There were 169 adults, 32 juvenile, and 33 children in the library in March.
There were four story hour sessions offered in March, with 20 adults and children participating.
There are 46 enrolled in the Dolly Parton reading program.
Lewis said with materials checked out, patrons saved $1,642.63 in March.
Lewis said staff will continue to work on book and database updates and relabeling.
He said in the last seven days leading up to the April meeting, the library has added 27 books.
The library director noted he learned Executive Orders could impact the local library. He said three orders may have the ability to remove approximately 16 to 18 million dollars for library budgets that includes money distributed through cooperatives and state funding for libraries in the State of Michigan.
Library Treasurer Wendell Stoeffler said the checking account total at Sturgis Bank and Trust before the bills that were approved to be paid at the April 22 meeting stands at $155,314.26 and there is $81,386.69 in the savings account.
Joel Amos Appointed New Board President
After current board president Jamie Camp said she was not interested in serving in an officer’s position, the Board unanimously approved Camp’s recommendation to appoint Joel Amos board president. The board also reappointed current treasurer Wendell Stoeffler as treasurer, reappointed Carole Brock-Cook vice president and reappointed Stormie Cook secretary.
