“Students really get so much out of this wonderful program through personal exchanges with their peers, mentor attorneys, and expert presenters,” said Justice Richard H. Bernstein, MSC liaison to the Learning Center. “Helping these future lawyers develop essential professional skills, get a feel for the practice of law, and learn about the judiciary is why this program is so worthwhile.”
Interested students can register for one of the following sessions:
• Monday-Friday, July 14-18, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Hall of Justice, Lansing
• Friday, July 25, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wayne County Criminal Justice Center, Detroit
Students will explore a real case in which police officers approached a vehicle, claiming to have smelled marijuana. The defendant was ordered out of the vehicle’s front passenger seat, and an officer found a gun beneath it during a warrantless search. The defendant was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and other firearms charges. Was the search reasonable under the Fourth Amendment, or did it violate the defendant’s constitutional rights? Can the evidence be used against him?
Participants will argue for the prosecution or defense, culminating with oral arguments before a panel of judges in a courtroom. Program presenters will include members of the judiciary.
Learning Center Coordinator Rachael L. Drenovsky explained the program further, “The goal is to have participants develop critical thinking and professional skills. They find out whether law school and a legal career might be for them.”
“Exploring Careers in the Law” is open to high school students entering grades 10-12 this fall, as well as 2025 graduates. Registration is limited to 24 participants per session selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact Rachael Drenovsky at 517-373-5027 or drenovskyr@courts.mi.gov.
