Pitching shines for G-A baseball team


The Galesburg-Augusta varsity baseball team entered a May 13 doubleheader against Delton-Kellogg with a seven game winning streak after sweeping a doubleheader over Saugatuck May 6 at Saugatuck in a division doubleheader.

G-A coach Tim Prince received two strong pitching performances in the doubleheader sweep.

Alex Krugh held Saugatuck to two hits in a 19-4 first game win and Jaden Fawcett duplicated the feat by holding the home team to two hits in the nightcap.

Krugh improved to 4-1 while increasing his team leading strikeout total to 65 in 30 and two-thirds innings with 13 strikeouts in the first game. He walked two over six innings.

G-A, now 13-6, was led at the plate by Ethan Gibson, who had three hits, including a double with two RBI, and Jonah Ranes, who also had three hits, including a home run with four RBI.

Fawcett improved to 7-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.28 by holding Saugatuck to two hits in a six inning shutout in the second game. He walked five batters but bumped his strikeout total to 48 in 32 and two-thirds innings with nine punch outs.

Krugh, who had two doubles, led G-A with three hits.

G-A JV baseball yeam sweeps Coldwater


After dropping its first six games of the season the Galesburg-Augusta JV boys baseball team has won three in a row including two wins over Coldwater May 9 at Coldwater.

The 3-6 Rams defeated the Cardinals 21-5 in the first game and 7-3 in the second contest.

G-A took advantage of 17 walks and two Ram pitchers held Coldwater to one hit in the first game.

R.J. Kasten, who had a double and drove in three runs, Cayden Allie, who had three RBI and Colton Robertson, who drove in three runs, each had two hits for G-A.

Carter Simmons did not allow a hit over three innings to secure the win.

Cayden Allie pitched one inning and allowed one hit with three walks and one strikeout.

R.J. Kasten scattered six hits over five innings to record the win in the second game. Kasten, who threw 42 of his 67 pitches for strikes, allowed three earned runs, seven walks and struck out seven Cardinals.

Brody Walling had two hits for G-A.

G-A track teams enjoy strong finishes


While the Galesburg-Augusta mens and womens track teams were both missing athletes who were on the senior trip, athletes from both squads enjoyed some strong finishes at the Gobles Invite May 9.

The Lady Rams finished sixth at the Gobles Invite with 41 points in the 20-team event and the G-A men finished 15th out of 21 teams with 16 points.

A second place finish by Ellesa Callender in the discus with a personal record throw of 100’11”, led the Lady Rams.

Audrey Dennis, with a personal record jump of 15’01”, finished third in the long jump.

Patrick Armock’s second place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.99 and a second place finish in the discus with a throw of 124’00”, led the G-A boys.

G-A coach Paul Schab said because senior Jaidyn Klimp has already qualified for the State Finals in the long jump through early qualifying, she will focus on qualifying for the state finals in some running events at the regionals and did not participate in the long jump at the regionals. That allows freshmen Audrey Dennis and Kayla Bortolussi to qualify at the regionals in the long jump.

Newton finishes 6th
at conference tournament


Galesburg-Augusta’s Peyton Newton advanced out of the play in bracket before settling for a sixth place finish at the SAC/Lakeland Conference Tournament May 9 at Allegan.

Newton, playing at No. 3 singles, won her first two play in bracket matches 6-1, 6-1 and 7-5, 6-1.

She then lost 6-1, 6-0, rebounded with an 8-5 win and finished sixth after falling 8-0.

Karlee Nigg, at No. 1 singles, and Lauren Gates, at No. 2 singles, each won an opening round set before bowing out.

Nigg won a first round match 6-1,6-0 before falling 6-4, 6-0.

Gates won her first round match 4-6, 6-4, 10-3, before falling short 6-0, 6-1.

G-A finished in a tie for 13th place at the Conference Tournament.

G-A and LMC/Bridgman finished with 25 points. Allegan placed first in the 13-team event with 100.5 points.

While the Galesburg-Augusta girls tennis team earned three wins, the team fell short 5-3 at South Haven May 7 in a makeup contest.
G-A lost four matches by forfeit.
