Special election conducted to fill partial term on Judicial Tenure Commission
The statewide special election will fill a partial term for a non-judicial seat on the JTC with a term ending December 31, 2026. Candidates must submit nominating petitions by emailing them to csharlow@michbar.org no later than June 16. Nominating petitions are available at www.michbar.org/programs/forms#election25.
Candidates must collect 50 valid signatures from active Michigan attorneys on their nominating petitions. To account for potential invalid signatures, candidates are encouraged to collect at least 55 signatures to ensure they meet the minimum requirement. For a signature to be valid, an active attorney can only sign one candidate’s nominating petition. Candidates cannot sign their own nominating petition, but they can be the petition circulator.
As a substitute for physical signatures, an “electronic confirmation of nomination” may be submitted in the following format:
I support the nomination of [candidate attorney’s name] to serve on the Judicial Tenure Commission.
[nominating attorney’s name]
[nominating attorney’s p number]
[nominating attorney’s address]
“Electronic confirmation of nomination” signatures must be compiled by the candidate and sent in one file along with the signed petition. Candidates should submit a biography of 200 words or fewer along with their nominating petitions.
Online voting for the special election will begin by July 1 and end on July 15 at 11:59 p.m. Ballots will be emailed to active Michigan attorneys at the email address they have on file with the SBM. Members can confirm their contact information at michbar.org/MemberArea.
Associations co-host Book Club for AAPI month May 28
The Book Club will discuss the memoir “Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant” by Curtis Chin. The memoir tells the story of Chin’s time growing up as a gay Chinese American kid in 1980s Detroit.
