Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido on Tuesday announced the plea of no contest to manslaughter by 54-year-old Mark Joseph Newsome, who killed his roommate, Dale Francis Mitchell, age 72, at a group home in Roseville last year.
Newsome and Mitchell got into a physical altercation at a group home which they shared with other roommates. One of their roommates witnessed the fight between Newsome and Mitchell, and called the Roseville Police Department which promptly dispatched officers to the location.
Upon arrival, Roseville Police found Mitchell bleeding and bruised in an unconscious condition on the floor of the house as a result of being beaten by Newsome.
The Roseville Fire Department was called to the scene where they attempted to resuscitate Mitchell with CPR, but were unable to do so.
Roseville police arrested Newsome at the home, and he was taken into custody without incident.
Following a warrant request by the Roseville Police, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office charged Newsome with Homicide - Murder Second Degree.
Newsome on Tuesday plead no contest during a jury trial before Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Richard Caretti to manslaughter with a sentence agreement to 5 to 15 years.
Newsome will be sentenced on June 24.
